Volleyball (15-4, 4-1 Peach Belt, No. 24 AVCA Division II Top 25, No. 2 South Region)
The No. 24-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team won two of three matches on the week, losing at No. 23 North Florida in a midweek match, then defeating USC Spartanburg and Lander in weekend home matches.
AASU lost to North Florida, 12-15, 7-15, 15-12, 8-15 on Wednesday evening. UNF remained perfect all-time against the Pirates, running its record to 14-0 in the overall series. Kris Bringewatt led the Pirates with 15 kills and Erin Melius recorded 42 assists.
Over the weekend, though, the Pirates rebounded with 3-0 wins over USCS and Lander. AASU defeated the Rifles, 15-5, 15-7, 15-10, behind sophomore Sofie Hakansson's 12 kills and .611 hitting percentage. The Pirates then dispatched Lander, 15-5, 15-5, 15-9, using a team-high .385 hitting percentage.
This week, AASU hosts Florida Tech in a Monday, 7:00 p.m. battle, then travels to Francis Marion on Fri., Oct. 6 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Patriots, and UNC Pembroke for a Sat., Oct. 7 date with the Braves.
Women's Cross Country (No. 5 South Region)
The AASU women's cross country team ran in Athens, Ga., over the weekend at the Bulldog Stampede, hosted by the University of Georgia.
Senior Nikki Garland saw her four consecutive individual title streak come to an end with a sixth-place finish, covering the six kilometer course in a time of 22:42.21. Senior Marie-Claude Ostiguy finished 24th in a time of 24:50.90, followed by sophomore Jillian Charles (28th, 25:30.33), senior Amanda Lagesse (32nd, 26:05.45) and freshmen Zsofi Golopencza (37th, 27:43.27) and Sarah Harris (42nd, 30:28.44).
AASU finished with 95 points, 33 behind Kennesaw State for third place. Georgia captured the team title with 32 points.
The Pirates next travel to Charleston, S.C., for the Citadel Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 7.
Men's and Women's Tennis
AASU hosted the ITA Men's Tennis Southeast Regional over the weekend and junior Blaise Tribolet advanced to the Southeast Region championship match, upsetting the tournament's No. 1 seed, Tobias Huning of Lander, 6-1, 6-2 en route to the finals berth. Tribolet could not get past another Lander player, however, as he lost in the final to No. 3 seed Evgeni Mikheev.
Pirate freshman Neil McPhee rebounded from his first-round loss to advance through the consolation singles bracket, winning the consolation finals with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over Jean-Francois Giguere of Georgia College & State.
The AASU doubles team of Christopher Petersen and Blaise Tribolet advanced to the semifinals, where they lost to eventual doubles champion Marco Borges and David Olave of Valdosta State, 8-4.
This week, the Pirate women travel to Milledgeville, Ga., for the GC&SU Fall Collegiates.
