Soccer (11-3-1 Overall, 5-1-1 Peach Belt Conference, No. 13 NSCAA DII Top 25)

The Armstrong Atlantic State women's soccer squad split two matches on the week, losing a 4-1 decision to Tusculum on Monday afternoon, then picking up a 5-4 overtime win at North Georgia on Saturday.

The Pirates hosted Tusculum on Monday in a battle of the top-ranked teams in the NCAA’s Southeast Region, but it was all Pioneers early. Tusculum scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the match, then scored an early second-half goal to take a 3-0 lead – the first time AASU has trailed by that large of a margin since the first 30 minutes of the season back in August. Lyndsi Stricklen scored a goal in the 67th minute, but the Pioneers added an insurance goal in the 81st minute for the 4-1 win, ending AASU’s 12-match home winning streak.

AASU then traveled to North Georgia on Saturday to face the Saints. In the first 15 minutes of the match, five goals were scored between the two teams and AASU held a 3-2 lead. A penalty kick awarded to the Saints just two minutes from halftime evened up the score at 3-all. Each team scored once in the first 15 minutes of the second half, sending the game into overtime  at 4-4. Jamie Craine delivered the game-winner on a free kick in the fifth minute of overtime for the win. Five different players scored for the Pirates on the afternoon – Stricklen, Brittany Carr, Alyssa Anderson and Kristin Savoy as well as Craine. With the win, AASU clinched a spot in the top four places in the standings, meaning the Pirates will host a first-round PBC Tournament match on the 30th.

The Pirates wrap up the regular season with a 3:30 p.m. matchup with Lander on Saturday, October 27.

Volleyball (14-17 Overall, 4-3 Peach Belt Conference)

The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team split its final two home matches of the 2007 season last week, dropping a tough five game match to Francis Marion on Wednesday, then rebounding to knock off UNC Pembroke in three games on Friday.

The Pirates rallied from a two-game deficit against Francis Marion and led, 10-7, in game five, but seven hitting errors in the final game doomed AASU. Brendyce Budd led the Pirates with 17 kills, while Gwen Clarke notched 15 and senior Kassi Kixmiller tied a career high with 10. Against the Braves on Friday, the Pirates and the Braves combined for 80 digs in a game one 30-27 AASU win. The Pirates then closed out the match with a 30-25 win in game two and a 30-26 win in game three.

Sophomore Nicole Yates tallied 26 digs, setting a new single-season dig record at AASU with 456. The old record of 440 was set by Christina Flores in 2004.

Two seniors played their final home matches at AASU on Friday evening as Kixmiller and Stacia McCoy wrapped up their four-year careers. The duo started and played the entire match with McCoy notching eight kills and 12 digs and Kixmiller collecting six kills.

AASU travels to Augusta this week for a pair of matches. The Pirates face the Jaguars on Friday, Oct. 26, in a 7:00 p.m. PBC matchup, then face St. Andrews Presbyterian on Saturday, Oct. 27, in a 1:00 p.m. neutral-site match.
