Cross Country

The AASU women's cross country team finished third at the Peach Belt Athletic Conference championships, while the men's cross country team finished fourth, on Saturday at the Riverside Country Club in Pembroke, N.C.

Junior Nikki Garland led the women's team with a second-place finish, finishing the 5,000 meter course in a time of 18:29.7. Sophomore Melanie Clarke finished seventh in a time of 19:26.3, while freshman Jillian Charles finished 10th in a time of 19:33.0. Garland, Clarke and Charles were all named to the All-Conference team, and Charles was named the PBAC's Freshman of the Year.

Freshman Paul McRae led the men's squad with a sixth-place finish, running the 8,000 meter course in a time of 26:02.6. Senior Gary Ginn finished 16th with a time of 26:41.5 and both McRae and Ginn earned All-Conference honors. McRae also won the PBAC Freshman of the Year honors, giving the Pirates a sweep of the newcomer honors.

After a week off, the Pirates will compete at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional in Spartanburg, S.C., on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Volleyball (31-1 overall, 7-1 PBAC)

The AASU volleyball squad split two road PBAC matches on the weekend, falling at Francis Marion, 3-1, but defeating UNC Pembroke, 3-0.

The Patriots stopped AASU's 29-match winning streak by taking three straight games after AASU had won the first game in Friday evening's match. AASU hit just .059 on the match and committed 10 service errors, eight blocking errors and four reception errors.

The Pirates rebounded to defeat UNC Pembroke on Saturday afternoon, hitting .327 as a team and notching 41 kills.

The Pirates play four matches this week, including a showdown with No. 25-ranked North Florida on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the ARC.

Men's and Women's Tennis

Maren Mueller advanced to the finals of the Rolex/ITA Division II Fall Championships, winning two matches, before having to default the final match to Petra Gaspar of BYU-Hawaii. Mueller dispatched Rachel Key of Presbyterian, 6-0, 6-0, then Tania Kovatchka of West Florida, 6-2, 6-4, but a scheduling problem meant Mueller missed her scheduled match in the finals and Rolex officials would not allow the match to be made up.

On the men's side, AASU's doubles team of Frederic Heitz and Stefan Wirtz won the B3 flight doubles bracket, defeating Darnir Krimer and Vesa Rakocevic of Bethune-Cookman in the finals of the South Carolina Fall Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
