Volleyball (24-7, 10-2 Peach Belt, No. 23 AVCA Division II Top 25, No. 3 South Region)
The No. 24-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team won two of three matches on the week and reached several milestones in the process.
On Wednesday evening, AASU hosted No. 21-ranked and Peach Belt Conference-leading North Florida and knocked off the Lady Ospreys in five games, 3-2. Lindsay Ehlers led the Pirates with 17 kills and Sofie Hakansson and Micah Roman added 14 kills as the Pirates, previously 0-14 against North Florida, won their first-ever match against the Lady Ospreys.
Friday evening, the Pirates handled Lander in three straight games, giving head coach Alan Segal his 100th career collegiate coaching victory in the 3-0 win. Ehlers again led the Pirates with a match-high 12 kills.
Saturday afternoon, the Pirates fell to USC Spartanburg, 3-2, in Spartanburg, S.C. Sofie Hakansson led AASU with 19 kills and Erin Melius recorded 54 assists. With her fourth assist in game one, Melius notched her 1,108th assist of the season, breaking the single-season assist mark for AASU.
This week, AASU wraps up its regular season home schedule with a 7:00 p.m. contest against UNC Pembroke on Fri., Nov. 3 and a 4:00 p.m. contest against Francis Marion on Sat., Nov. 4.
Women's Cross Country (No. 5 South Region)
The Armstrong Atlantic State women's cross country team, fresh off of a week of rest and its third consecutive third-place finish in the Peach Belt Conference, travels to Jacksonville, Fla., for the NCAA Division II South Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 4.
Men's and Women's Tennis
The AASU women's tennis team competed at the 2000 Southern Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of South Carolina, over the weekend.
Zsofi Golopencza captured the A-2 singles bracket championship, defeating South Carolina's Lynn-Yin Tan in the final, 6-2, 6-3. Zsofi also knocked off Lisa Walgenbach of Purdue, 6-4, 6-1, and Martina Tekalova of Bethune-Cookman, 6-2, 6-1, en route to the championships.
Golopencza and doubles teammate Michaela Kratochvilova advanced to the championship of the A-1 doubles bracket, picking up a huge upset in the first round. The duo defeated Tennessee's Alison Ojeda and Vilmarie Castellvi, 8-5, the No. 9-ranked doubles duo in NCAA Divison I in the 2000 ITA Fall Presesason Rankings. Golopencza and Kratochvilova then knocked off the Louisville team of McLaughlin and Penn, 8-3, before losing to the team of Kostrkounova and Miklikova of Bethune-Cookman, 9-8 (7-5), in the championship match.
Also advancing to the championship match her bracket was freshman Alejandra Aguilar. Aguilar picked up three wins in the C-2 singles bracket, defeating Stephanie Salomone of USC Aiken, 6-0, 6-0, Evelyn King of Wofford, 6-1, 6-1, and Kate Veazey of East Carolina, 6-2, 6-4, before falling to Wissal Benkhalifa of Coastal Carolina, 7-5, 6-1, in the championship match.
This week, the Lady Pirate netters travel to St. Augustine, Fla., for the 2000 Florida Collegiates, hosted by Flagler College, on Fri., Nov. 3-Sun., Nov. 5.
