Volleyball (14-6 Overall, 5-2 Peach Belt)
The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team picked up three wins on the week to improve to 14-6 overall and 5-2 in the Peach Belt Conference.
The Pirates hosted Valdosta State in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday and defeated the Blazers, 30-25, 30-25, 16-30, 30-13. Sarah Haynes recorded 14 kills and seven blocks, while freshman Ashley Lavender added 12 kills and 13 digs.
On Friday evening, the Pirates hosted Francis Marion in a Peach Belt Conference match and beat the Patriots, 28-30, 30-19, 30-13, 30-15. The Pirates got 11 kills from Haynes, 18 digs from junior Sofie Hakansson and 29 assists from freshman Shannon Tracey in the victory, AASU's fifth straight over the Patriots.
AASU the completed a perfect week with a 30-24, 30-22, 30-26 win over UNC Pembroke on Saturday. The Pirates were led by Haynes' 10 kills and five blocks, junior Erin Melius' 37 assists and 11 digs and sophomore Erin Welty's career-high 14 digs and five blocks.
This week, the Pirates begin a three week long, 10-game road trip, beginning with a match against No. 6-ranked Tampa on Thursday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. AASU then will play two matches at the 25th Annual FSC Moccasin Invitational on Saturday, October 13, against Florida Tech and Florida Southern.
Women's Tennis
The Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis team will be in action this weekend at the Georgia College & State University Fall Championships in Milledgeville, Ga.
The tournament will be a final tuneup for sophomore Zsofi Golopencza and senior Michaela Kratochvilova before they travel to Dallas, Texas, for the ITA Small College National Championships on October 19-21. Golopenza will be competing in the singles draw and will also be in the doubles draw with Kratochvilova.
Golf
The Armstrong Atlantic State men's golf team, coming off of a seventh place finish at the Johnny Palmer/Old North State Invitational two weeks ago, is action today and tomorrow at the Presbyterian College Intercollegiate in Clinton, S.C. Sophomores Thomas Whittaker and Clay Best and freshmen Nick Cowper, Lee Clarke and Jonathan Cox are competing in the tournament for the Pirates, which will consist of 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.
Men's Tennis
The Pirate men's tennis team hosted the 2001 ITA Men's Tennis Southeast Regional this weekend and two AASU players advanced to the quarterfinals. Sophomore Roger Thiele and freshman Dale White each picked up three wins in the singles bracket.
Thiele defeated Per Schartum-Hansen of Georgia College & State, 6-2, 6-7 (8-6), 6-4, then upset No. 5-8 seed Hagen Endler of North Florida, 6-4, 6-4. He advanced to the quarterfinals when third-round opponent and AASU teammate Leonardo Motta retired after an injury in the second set, but his run came to and end with a 6-3, 6-0 loss to No. 3 seed David Olave of North Florida.
White advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dusko Ljubojevic of Columbus State, a 6-3, 7-5 win over Alessandro DeMarzo of USC Spartanburg and a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win over Andreas von Michaelis of Valdosta State. White lost in the quarterfinals to No. 2 seed Laszlo Leiter of Francis Marion, 6-1, 6-2.
The Pirates return to action on October 19-21 at the South Carolina Fall Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
