Volleyball (18-4, 6-1 Peach Belt, No. 24 AVCA Division II Top 25, No. 2 South Region)

The No. 24-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team captured three matches on the week, defeating Florida Tech, Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke, all by 3-0 scores.

AASU hosted Florida Tech in a key South Region matchup on Monday and knocked off the Panthers, 15-13, 15-3, 15-10. Sophomore Sarah Haynes recorded a team-high 14 kills and hit .478.

Over the weekend, the Pirates visited Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke and brought home wins in each match. At FMU, the Pirates hit .325 en route to a 15-3, 15-4, 15-7 win. Lindsay Ehlers led the Pirates with nine kills and a .437 hitting percentage. Against UNCP, the Pirates hit .336 and were led by Kris Bringewatt's 12 kills and .571 hitting percentage.

This week, AASU travels to Florida for a Thurs., Oct. 12 matchup with No. 8 Tampa at 7:30 p.m., then competes in the 24th Florida Southern Moccasin Invitational on Fri., Oct. 13 and Sat., Oct. 14.

Women's Cross Country (No. 5 South Region)

The Armstrong Atlantic State women's cross country team captured the college division of The Citadel Invitational on Saturday morning, defeating seven other schools and taking home their fourth title of the season.

AASU compiled 57 points to take home the title, ahead of fellow Peach Belt school Lander, who finished with 87 points. The Pirates were led by senior Marie-Claude Ostiguy, who finished third in a time of 19:52 over the five kilometer course. Sophomore Jillian Charles finished fourth with a time of 20:04 and senior Amanda Lagesse finished 13th in a time of 21:28. Freshmen Zsofi Golopencza (21st, 22:18) and Sarah Harris (25th, 22:35) rounded out the Pirates' scoring.

AASU takes a week off before at the Peach Belt Championships on Sat., Oct. 21 in Columbus, Ga.

Men's and Women's Tennis

Three AASU women's tennis players took part in the Georgia College & State Women's Tennis Fall Collegiate Championships this weekend in Milledgeville, Ga.

Junior Michaela Kratochvilova advanced to the “A” singles championship, picking up wins over Marisca Meyer of ASU (6-3, 6-1) and Elizabeth Nieto of CCSU (6-0, 6-3) and avenging a loss two weeks ago from the ITA Southeast Regional by defeating Lila Biktyakova of GC&SU (3-6, 6-4, 6-2). In the final, Kratochvilova met the No. 1 seed, Anzela Zguna of Rollins, and lost a tough three-set match, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 for the championship.

Freshmen Alejandra Aguilar and Laura Puch also saw action, each competing in the “B” singles flight. Aguilar captured her first match, a 6-0, 6-1 win over Leslie Bechtold of KSU, but lost her second-round match to Lisa Sehannie of KSU, 6-2, 6-4. Puch received a bye and won her second-round match, a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Patricia Zurita of ASU, but lost to Carla Prieto of Rollins, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in the semifinals. Aguilar and Puch also teamed up for doubles action in the “B” flight doubles and advanced to the flight championship, winning two matches by defeating the team of Greig/Guthas of GSW (8-3) and Zurita/Kovelchova of Clayton State (8-3). The duo lost in the championship match to the team of Picton and Prieto of Rollins, 8-3. The AASU netters are back in action at the Georgia Tech Fall Tournament on Fri.-Sun., Oct. 13-15, in Atlanta, Ga.

Men's Golf

The Armstrong Atlantic State men's golf team competes in its second tournament of the season on Mon., Oct. 9 and Tues., Oct. 10 at the Barton College Invitational in Gram, N.C.

The Pirates, who finished 12th in the 25-team Old North State Invitational last month in their inaugural tournament of the year, will compete against several Division I schools, including Duke, North Carolina and NC State in the Barton College Invitational. AASU tees off at 1:00 p.m. and will play 18 holes on Monday, then play a second round on Tuesday. The tournament is a 36-hole affair.
