Men's Basketball (5-9 Overall; 2-2 PBAC)
The Pirate men's basketball squad followed up its worst loss of the season by 11 points at Francis Marion on Wednesday evening with its biggest win of the season, knocking off Peach Belt Athletic Conference preseason favorite Lander University, 76-65, on Saturday evening at Alumni Arena.
AASU led for the first 37 minutes of the game at Francis Marion on Wednesday, but key three-pointers and foul shooting by the Patriots sent the Pirates to their fifth straight loss. Junior Cyrille Mainnemarre led AASU in scoring for the second consecutive game, collecting 14 points, while Robert Campbell chipped in 13 points.
Saturday, the Pirates played their third game in six days, but it was the visiting Senators who looked winded as AASU used precision passing and three-point shooting register the victory. Junior Robert Campbell came up big, scoring 23 points and dishing out eight assists on the night. Cyrille Mainnemarre continued his hot scoring hand, adding 18 points, while junior Greg Favors collected 10 rebounds his seventh game with 10+ rebounds, a total that leads the Peach Belt.
This week, coach Mills' squad plays just one contest, on Saturday, Jan. 15 at Columbus State. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
Women's Basketball (3-11 Overall; 0-4 PBAC)
Lynn Jarrett's women's hoops squad fell to 0-4 in the Peach Belt Athletic Conference with two tough losses on the week.
The Lady Pirates faced their fourth Top 25 ranked opponent of the season on Wednesday, losing to the No. 18-ranked Francis Marion Lady Patriots, 76-56. Lexie Martin led the way for AASU with 10 points, while Duanda Ball chipped in 11 points and Rebecca Hubbard added 10 first-half points.
On Saturday, the Lady Pirates trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half against Lander, but fought back to within three points with under a minute remaining. Lexie Martin's tying three-point try with 36 seconds left hit the front of the rim, however, and AASU suffered its fifth loss in a row. Freshman Duanda Ball led four AASU players in double figures, scoring 12. Lori Green added 11, while Martin and junior Sonya Mintz chipped in 10.
AASU travels to Columbus State for its only contest of the week on Saturday, Jan. 15. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
