Men’s Basketball (2-0 Overall, 0-0 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s basketball squad opened up the season 2-0 with wins at the PBC/Carolinas Conference tournament hosted by Francis Marion over the weekend.
The Pirates edged Coker, 75-73, on junior T.T. Hall’s baseline jumper with 4.7 seconds remaining to give AASU the victory on Friday. Senior Jamaal Galloway scored a game-high 19 points, including 4-of-7 three-pointers, giving him 201 threes in his career. He is the only AASU player to reach that plateau. Patrick Sanou added 15 points and nine rebounds.
The Pirates then defeated St. Andrews, 79-69, on Saturday. AASU forced 27 turnovers and recorded 16 steals in the contest. Hall led the Pirates with a game-high 23 points, while Galloway chipped in 17 points.
In his last four games at the Smith University Center, Galloway has scored 62 points (15.3 points per game).
AASU travels to Carrollon, Ga., on Saturday, November 24, for a 6:30 p.m. game at West Georgia in its only action of the week.
Women’s Basketball (1-1 Overall, 0-0 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State women's basketball squad split its two season-opening games over the weekend in Valdosta.
The Pirates knocked off Alabama-Huntsville, 74-57, on Friday afternoon in its season-opener. Kaneetha Gordon registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Lacey Willis notched 14 points. Lindsey Holmes and Kelly Versluis added 12 points apiece.
AASU then fell to No. 11-ranked Valdosta State on Saturday, 66-54. Holmes hit career highs with six three-pointers and 18 points to lead the Lady Pirates. Holmes went 6-of-14 from three-point range, but her teammates combined went 0-for-6 in the loss to the Blazers. Gordon, the PBC's leading rebounder a year ago, notched 12 rebounds to go with eight points in the loss.
AASU crosses the country for two games in California before Thanksgiving this week. The Lady Pirates take on Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday, November 20, at 6:00 p.m., then Cal State Los Angeles on Wednesday, November 21, at 5:30 p.m.
