Cross Country

The AASU men's and women's cross country teams travel to Spartanburg, S.C., this weekend for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. Up for grabs are two women's and one men's spot in the Nov. 20 NCAA Division II National Championships in Joplin, Mo.

The women's team, fresh off of their third-place finish in the Peach Belt a week ago, need to climb ahead of Kennesaw State and North Florida to make their first nationals appearance. Junior Nikki Garland, who competed in the 1997 NCAA Division II National Championships as an individual, looks to return to the national scene after a fine regular season in which she finished first or second in every race.

The men's team, fourth at the PBAC's, need a strong performance as only one men's team will advance to nationals. Freshman Paul McRae, sixth at the PBAC meet and the conference's Freshman of the Year, could qualify individually with a strong run.

Volleyball (32-3 overall, 9-2 PBAC)

The AASU volleyball squad split four matches on the week, falling at SCAD and against No. 24-ranked North Florida in three games, but rebounding to defeat Augusta State, 3-1, and Lander,

3-0, over the weekend.

The Pirates are third in the Peach Belt, one game behind Francis Marion and two games behind UNF. AASU has a match remaining with each as they continue their quest for postseason play and their first PBAC title.

The Pirates will host UNC Pembroke on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m., then take on the Patriots on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. in their final two home regular season matches of the year.

Men's and Women's Tennis

The men's tennis team competed at the Charleston Southern Low Country Orthopaedic Invitational over the weekend. Stefan Wirtz advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A singles bracket, upsetting No. 2 seed Andreas Mardbrink of Campbell, 6-3, 6-3, to get to the semis, but could not advance any further. Frederic Heitz advanced to the semifinals of the Flight B singles bracket, but lost in three sets to Charleston Southern's Alejandro Villaroel, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The tournament concludes the fall season for the men's and women's squads. The spring seasons will begin in February.
