Volleyball (25-8 Overall, 10-1 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball squad won two Peach Belt Conference last week, running its winning streak to four games as it heads into the final week of regular season competition.
Friday, the Pirates defeated UNC Pembroke, 31-29, 30-14, 30-25. The Pirates overcame a sluggish first game in which they hit just .086 in winning, 31-29, to hit .309 in the final two games to pick up the victory. Senior Sofie Hakansson led all players with 11 kills and 12 digs, while senior Sarah Haynes hit .588 for the match with 10 kills and no errors in 17 attacks. Senior Erin Melius recorded 37 assists and also notched her 100th kill of the season, giving the Pirates eight separate players who have collected at least 100 kills this season, a school record.
Against Francis Marion, the Pirates won, 30-17, 30-12, 30-20. AASU hit .327 for the match and was led by senior Shelley Weekes, who hit .526 with a match-high 12 kills, and senior Sofie Hakansson, who hit .500 with 11 kills. Senior Erin Melius tallied 35 assists as the Pirates reached double-digit wins in Peach Belt Conference matches for the fourth year in a row. Prior to 1999, the most league wins the Pirates had recorded was five in 1997.
This week, the Pirates play for first place in the Peach Belt Conference with a Wednesday, November 6, meeting at No. 14-ranked North Florida. AASU then returns home to host USC Aiken on Friday, November 8, at 7:00 p.m. and Augusta State on Saturday, November 9, at 4:00 p.m. Saturday's match will be Senior Day, where the Pirates will pay tribute to their five seniors before the match - setter Erin Melius, outside hitters Sofie Hakansson, Shelley Weekes and Kinsey Ross and middle hitter Sarah Haynes.
Men's Golf
The No. 18-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State golf squad is in action on Monday, November 4 and Tuesday, November 5 at the Rollins College Invitational in Ocoee, Fla.
