Men’s Basketball (9-3 Overall, 3-2 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State men's basketball team split two Peach Belt Conference games on the week, defeating Georgia Southwestern on the road on Wednesday, 74-64, but falling to No. 22-ranked Augusta State, 83-82, in overtime on Saturday at home. The loss snaps AASU’s nine-game home winning streak and was just the third loss for the Pirates at home in the last 26 contests.

The Pirates hit a season-high 13 three-pointers in Wednesday’s 10-point win over the Hurricanes, led by Jamaal Galloway’s 16 points on five threes and Corey Johnson’s 14 points on four threes. AASU shot 52.8 percent from the floor and 52 percent from three-point range in the win, avenging a loss to the Hurricanes last season in Americus.

AASU then put its six-game winning streak on the line on Saturday against the Jaguars. The Pirates held a two-point lead at the end of regulation, but Garret Siler’s dunk with 0.5 seconds left sent the game to overtime. A free throw by the Jaguars’ Steve Smith put Augusta State up by one, and the Pirates could not get a game-winning shot to fall in the final 37 seconds of overtime. Johnson registered a season-high 27 points in the loss as the Pirates hit 14 three-pointers as a team.

The 27 three-pointers that AASU has collected in its last two games are the most for a Pirate squad in back-to-back games since 1991-92, and AASU has now hit 10+ threes in three straight games for the first time since December 30, 2005 to January 11, 2006.

AASU travels to Milledgeville on Wednesday, January 16, for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Bobcats in the Pirates’ only action this week.

Women’s Basketball (9-3 Overall, 3-2 Peach Belt Conference)
The AASU women's basketball squad stretched its win streak to five with a 72-54 win over Georgia Southwestern State on Wednesday, but watched the win streak fall on Saturday with a 79-67 loss to Augusta State.

Senior Jasmine Herron’s 18 points helped lead the Lady Pirates past the Lady Hurricanes on Wednesday. Herron hit 6-of-9 shots from the floor, including 2-of-3 three-pointers, for her biggest point output since her freshman year. Lindsey Holmes added 14 points and Lacey Willis came off the bench for 13 points..

Saturday, the Lady Pirates got an outstanding night from senior Kaneetha Gordon with 24 points and 13 rebounds, but could not spring the upset over the Jaguars. Gordon is now just 10 rebounds shy of the school rebounding record of 936, set by Gigi Gibson in 1980-84. She also ranks second all-time in blocked shots at AASU with 63, and this week she moved into fifth place on the all-time scoring chart with 1,131 points.

The Lady Pirates travel to Milledgeville for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with GCSU on Wednesday, January 16, in their only game of the week.
