Volleyball (26-8 Overall, 11-3 Peach Belt, 5th South Region)

The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team wrapped up the 2001 regular season with three conference wins on the week, clinching a tie for second place in the Peach Belt Conference for the second year in a row.

The Pirates defeated Augusta State, 30-19, 30-17, 30-15, on Tuesday evening behind junior Sofie Hakansson's 10 kills.

AASU then knocked off UNC Pembroke on Friday evening, 30-22, 30-19, 25-30, 30-26, behind Hakansson and junior Sarah Haynes, who each tallied 15 kills, and junior Erin Melius, who tallied 50 assists.

On Saturday, the Pirates wrapped up the regular season with a 30-15, 30-15, 30-18 over Francis Marion.

The Pirates are the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference tournament in Jacksonville, Fla, on November 9-10 and will face No. 6-seeded Lander at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 9 in their first-round match. Should the Pirates defeat Lander, they would face the winner of the Francis Marion/USC Spartanburg match at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The championship match is set for Saturday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m.

Women's Tennis

Sophomore Zsofi Golopencza captured the A-1 singles title at the 2001 Southern Collegiates on Sunday, defeating Clemson's Anna Savitskaya, 6-4, 6-2, in Columbia, S.C. on the campus of the University of South Carolina.

Golopencza, the ITA Division II Singles winner earlier this season, wraps up her fall campaign with a 13-2 singles record and will be the No. 1 ranked singles player in the country when the /Wingspanbank.com Division II rankings are released later this fall.

In doubles action, the duo of sophomores Alejandra Aguilar and Laura Puch defeated the duo of Catherine Brown and Audrey George of South Carolina, 9-7, in the C Doubles bracket championship match.

The Lady Pirates are finished with their fall season and will start the spring match season in January.

Men's Tennis

The AASU men's tennis team will take part in its final fall tournament of the season this weekend, November 9-11, at Flagler College for the 2001 Florida Intercollegiates in St. Augustine, Fla.

Men's Golf

The Pirate golf team travels to Ocoee, Fla., this week for the 2001 Rollins College Intercollegiate tournament on Tuesday, November 6 and Wednesday, November 7. AASU finished 11th in last year's tournament and will send sophomores Thomas Whittaker and Clay Best and freshmen Ashley Loyd, Nick Cowper and Lee Clarke to the event this week.
