The Armstrong Atlantic State women's soccer squad advanced to the PBC Championship match for a second straight season, but lost to No. 6 Columbus State in overtime of the title match, 2-1.
The Pirates hosted North Georgia in a first-round matchup on Tuesday and a Kristin Burton goal five minutes into overtime gave the Pirates the 1-0 victory.
AASU then traveled to Columbus for the PBC Final Four on Friday. The Pirates defeated the Bearcats, 3-1, in a semifinal match to earn a berth in the championship. Lyndsi Stricklen, Brittany Carr and Burton each found the back of the net in helping the Pirates build a 3-0 lead, and Tracey Mitchell held Lander scoreless in her 74 minutes of action, making four saves.
That set up a showdown with Columbus State for the second straight year in the title match. CSU scored first, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime on Leslie Mathews’ goal in the 43rd minute, but the Pirates answered on Kristin Burton’s goal straight in from a corner kick in the 51st minute, tying the match at 1-1. CSU would net the winner in the 93rd minute as Jill Walthall scored on a redirect from Stephanie Parrish, edging off the post into the goal for the win.
AASU placed three players on the All-Tournament team as Burton joined defenders Alyssa Anderson and Kelli Bahr in receiving honors.
The Pirates will now host one of two NCAA Southeast Region matchups this week. AASU is the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NCAA Championships and will play No. 5 seed Lincoln Memorial at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. The winner of that matchup will play top-seeded Tusculum on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Volleyball (16-19 Overall, 5-5 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team wrapped up the regular season with two road losses in the league, falling to 5-5 in the PBC and 16-19 overall.
The Pirates hit just. 058 in a 30-20, 30-23, 30-21 loss at Lander on Friday evening. Freshman Brendyce Budd notched 10 kills and 18 digs, while sophomore Nicole Yates tallied 23 digs. It was Lander’s first-ever win over the Pirates in 22 tries.
AASU then took on PBC regular season champion USC Aiken on Saturday and fell in four games to the Pacers, 30-23, 29-31, 30-20, 30-21. Antje Reuleke led all players with 16 kills, while Gwen Clarke notched 15 kills and Stacia McCoy recorded 20 digs. AASU’s game agains the Pacers was the first by a league opponent since September.
As a team, the Pirates have set a single-season dig record, nothing 2,478 digs in 35 matches this season snapping the old record of 2,385 digs, set last season. Yates, who has already set the single-season AASU dig record, has posted 550 digs this season, one of the top 10 single-season dig totals in PBC history.
The Pirates will now head to the Peach Belt Conference tournament as the No. 3 seed and face No. 6 seeded Augusta State on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Greenwood, S.C. The winner takes on No. 2-seeded Lander at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, with the PBC Championship match taking place on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
