Men's Basketball (5-3 Overall)
The AASU men's basketball team split two games on the week, losing a three-point decision to Presbyterian, 75-72, on Wednesday, but rebounding to defeat cross-town rival Savannah State, 90-50, on Saturday.
The Pirates brought a three-game winning streak into Wednesday's matchup with preseason-SAC favorite Presbyterian and shot 51 percent in the first half en route to a 35-32 halftime lead, but the Blue Hose used a 21-5 run in the second half, hitting 7-of-12 three-pointers after intermission, to come away with a 75-72 victory. Junior David Koncul led the Pirates with 26 points while senior Robert Campbell added 10 points, eight assists and four steals.
Saturday, the Pirates looked to snap a three-game losing streak to their cross-town rivals, the Savannah State Tigers. AASU held the Tigers without a field goal for 7:12 of the first half, building a 39-25 halftime lead, and didn't let up in the second half, coming away with a 40-point victory, the largest victory margin in the series between the two schools. Senior Cyrille Mainnemarre led four Pirates in double figures with 20 points.
This week, the Pirates travel to Atlanta, Ga., to play Clark Atlanta on Wed., Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m., then return home to open up their Peach Belt Conference schedule with a Sat., Dec. 9 game against Kennesaw State at 4:00 p.m.
Women's Basketball (2-3 Overall)
The AASU women's basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak with a road win over Spelman College on Wednesday, improving its record under first-year head coach Roger Hodge to 2-3.
Sophomore Zandrique Cason led the way again with a game-high 31 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double in the Lady Pirates' first five games. Junior guard Lexie Martin chipped in 19 points as the Lady Pirates shot 50 percent from the floor in victory. Sophomore guard Kristin Brewer added 11 points while Spelman was led by Nicole Bullock's 18 points.
A transfer from Liberty University, Cason is the first AASU women's basketball player to begin her career with five straight double-doubles since Renee Rice, the 1991-92 Peach Belt Player of the Year, began her Lady Pirate career with 12 straight double-doubles. Rice is also the last AASU player to average a double-double for the Lady Pirates in one season.
The Lady Pirates play two home games this week, hosting Spelman on Wed., Dec. 6 at 6:00 p.m., then opening up their Peach Belt Conference schedule with a Sat, Dec. 9 game against Kennesaw State at 2:00 p.m.
