Men's Basketball (10-5 Overall, 6-2 Peach Belt)
The Armstrong Atlantic State men's basketball team ran its winning streak to three with wins over Francis Marion and USC Spartanburg on the week.
The Pirates hosted Francis Marion on Wednesday and knocked off the Patriots, 76-55, for AASU's largest margin of victory in a Peach Belt Conference game in three years. Senior Mick Jordan scored 13 points and junior Dave Pisarcik added 10 points as ten AASU players found their way into the scoring column. AASU committed a season-low six turnovers in the victory.
On Saturday, the Pirates traveled to USC Spartanburg and defeated the Rifles, 76-64. AASU set a PBC record by hitting 21-of-22 foul shots in the game (21-of-22) and the Pirates were led by senior Donta Humphries' 17 points and junior Jason Sanders' 14 points.
This week, the Pirates host GC&SU on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m., then host UNC Pembroke for Homecoming on Saturday, January 26 at 7:30 p.m.
Women's Basketball (6-9 Overall, 4-4 Peach Belt)
The Lady Pirates remained at .500 in the conference by splitting two games on the week, knocking off Francis Marion but falling at USC Spartanburg.
AASU trailed the Lady Patriots on Wednesday by 10 points, 48-38, with 4:40 remaining in the game, but the Lady Pirates rallied, scoring the final 12 points of the contest to come away with the 50-48 victory. Junior Zandrique Cason stretched her double-double streak to four with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Lexie Martin regained her shooting touch with a team-high 14 points.
On Saturday, the Lady Pirates endured a foul fest against USC Spartanburg, traveling to the free throw line 36 times in a 67-54 loss at the Lady Rifles. AASU made just three field goals in the second half and shot just 33 percent from the field, turning the ball over 24 times. Lexie Martin led all scorers with 22 points, including 12-of-14 from the free-throw line, while Zandrique Cason added 14 points.
This week, AASU hosts GC&SU on Wednesday, January 23 at 5:30 p.m., then host UNC Pembroke for Homecoming on Saturday, January 26 at 5:30 p.m.
Women's Tennis (No. 4 NCAA Division II)
Sophomore Zsofi Golopencza advanced to the semifinals of the UGA Invitational over the weekend, picking up singles wins over Carolina Ramirez of Auburn, 6-1, 6-0, and Lori Grey of UGA, 6-0, 6-3, before falling to Agata Cioroch, 6-3, 6-0.
The duo of Golopencza and Kratochvilova advanced to the doubles finals and will face the UGA team of Cioroch and Smith on Monday morning.
Baseball (No. 18 Collegiate Baseball Division II)
The 2002 AASU baseball squad opens the regular season on Saturday, January 26 at 11:00 a..m. with a scheduled doubleheader against St. Andrews. AASU returns 15 players from last season's squad that finished the year 38-15, ranked No. 15 in the nation.
