Men's Basketball (3-4 Overall; 1-0 PBAC)

The Pirate men's basketball squad split two meetings on the week, losing by two to Fort Valley State on Mon., Dec. 6, but rebounding with a big road win at Kennesaw State on Sat., Dec. 11.

Fort Valley State's Jonathan Nelson hit a jumper with eight seconds remaining to give the visiting Wildcats a 67-65 win on Monday. The Wildcats swept the home-and-home series from the Pirates, thanks to a suffocating defense that forced 74 AASU turnovers in the two meetings. Junior Greg Favors led the Pirates with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, while junior Tavares Brown added 15 points.

Saturday, the Pirates snapped their three-game losing streak with an impressive 76-70 overtime win at Kennesaw State in their PBAC opener. Ronald Thompson hit a free throw to tie the game at 60-apiece, then David Koncul helped the Pirates open the overtime frame on an 8-0 run to pick up their first victory ever at Kennesaw State. Koncul hit 8-of-9 shots from the field, including six-of-seven threes, en route to a career-high 25 points, while Greg Favors scored 13 points and added 11 rebounds.

Favors earned PBAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors for his two double-doubles, the first AASU men's player to be so honored in two seasons.

This week, coach Mills' squad hosts Belmont Abbey and Lenoir-Rhyne in 8:00 p.m. matchups on Saturday, Dec. 17 and Sunday, Dec. 18, respectively.

Women's Basketball (2-6 Overall; 0-1 PBAC)

Lynn Jarrett's women's hoops squad battled hard, but lost 70-57 at No. 13-ranked Kennesaw State on Sat., Dec. 11, in the PBAC opener for both teams.

AASU trailed by 14 points at halftime, 36-22, and by as many as 19 in the second half before battling back to trail by just four on Lexie Martin's three-pointer with 5:56 remaining. The Owls then went on a 15-6 run to close out the game and pick up the win.

Sophomore Lori Green led the Lady Pirates with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, while sophomore Rica Bush added 10 points. AASU has lost five straight games, all away from home.

AASU travels to St. Petersburg, Fla., on Fri., Dec. 17 and Sat., Dec. 18 to play in the Eckerd College Holiday Classic. The Lady Pirates face Eckerd at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Rollins College at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
