Men's Basketball (4-3 Overall, 1-1 Peach Belt)

The Armstrong Atlantic State men's basketball team defeated Savannah State, 53-51, on Monday evening to sweep the season series and improve to 4-3 overall.

Senior Willard Winn's blocked shot of Darris Kelly's baseline jumper preserved the slim two-point victory. The host Tigers - never down by more than seven points in the second half - rallied to tie the game at 51-all on Jasmin Lowe's three-pointer from the left corner with 32 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, the Pirates' Donta Humphries fed Lamarr Chears inside with a bounce pass, and Chears converted the layup to give AASU (4-3) the 53-51 lead. Winn's block on the game's final shot secured the victory, the fourth straight for the Pirates over the Tigers and put AASU over .500 for the first time this season. Junior Dave Pisarcik led all scorers with 15 points, while Winn and Chears each chipped in 10 points for AASU.

The Pirates host the 2001 AASU Christmas Classic on Friday, December 21 and Saturday, December 22 in their final action of the year. AASU will face Carson-Newman on Friday at 7:00 p.m., then the Pirates will take on Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Fellow PBC school UNC Pembroke will also compete in the Classic, facing Lenoir-Rhyne at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Carson-Newman at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Women's Basketball (3-5 Overall, 1-1 Peach Belt)

The Lady Pirates ran their winning streak to three games with a 46-45 win over cross-town rival Savannah State on Monday, sweeping the season series between the two teams.

The game came down to the buzzer - literally - as AASU held on for the win over the Lady Tigers. The Pirates kept the Lady Tigers in the ball game by committing 36 turnovers and converting on just 10 of 31 foul shots, but it was junior Zandrique Cason's free throw with six seconds remaining that put AASU up, 46-42, and secured the victory. Savannah State's Renee Williams hit a long three-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin. Cason led all players with 16 points, while Williams led the Lady Tigers with 12 points.

The Lady Pirates travel to Hickory, N.C., for a 3:00 p.m. game at Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, December 19 in their final game of the 2001 season.
