On Saturday, the Pirates hosted Lander for their 2001-2002 home opener. AASU led by five at halftime, but the Senators came back in the second half and eventually won, 53-30, on Adrian Penland's three-point shot with 36 seconds remaining. Women's Basketball (1-5 Overall, 1-1 Peach Belt)
The Lady Pirates split two games this week in Peach Belt Conference action, losing at No. 18-ranked Francis Marion, 80-56, on Wednesday, but picking up their first win of the season with a 57-52 victory over Lander on Saturday.
AASU traveled to Florence, S.C., for the Lady Pirates' second game this season against a Top 25-ranked team and played a tough first half, trailing by just four points at Francis Marion, 37-33, but the Patriots opened the second half with a 14-0 run and cruised to the victory. Zandrique Cason led the Lady Pirates with 11 points and nine rebounds as FMU got revenge for last season's loss to the Lady Pirates, AASU's only win against a Top 25-ranked team in the last four years.
The Lady Pirates returned home on Saturday and seized the opportunity to capture their first win of the season against Lander, defeating the Senators, 57-52. Zandrique Cason scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, while junior Shaletra Hodge notched her first double-double for the Lady Pirates with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
