Men's Basketball (7-10 Overall; 4-3 PBAC)
The Pirate men's basketball squad split two games on the week, defeating North Florida, 70-60, behind Robert Campbell's career-high 29 points, but falling to No. 7 Georgia College & State, 96-81, on the road.
Campbell has had the hot hand for the Pirates in conference play, averaging 18.9 points in PBAC games so far this season. He also leads the team in overall scoring, averaging 14.1 points per game, and ranks 13th in the conference. Campbell also is averaging 5.4 assists per game, a total that leads the Peach Belt. Junior Greg Favors continues to lead the team in rebounding with 9.0 per game and ranks fourth in the Peach Belt.
This week, coach Mills' squad hosts UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. and Kennesaw State on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 4:00 p.m.
Women's Basketball (3-14 Overall; 0-7 PBAC)
Lynn Jarrett's women's hoops squad dropped two games on the week, losing to North Florida, 77-68, and at Georgia College & State, 69-64.
Freshman Duanda Ball scored a career-high 26 points for the Lady Pirates in Wednesday's game against UNF and leads AASU in scoring, averaging 12.6 points per game. Sophomore Lexie Martin scored 21 at Georgia College & State and is averaging 9.1 points per game. Junior Sonya Mintz paces the Lady Pirates on the boards, averaging 5.6 per game.
AASU hosts UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 5:30 p.m., then entertains Kennesaw State on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 2:00 p.m.
Women's Tennis (No. 4 NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll)
Two players of the No. 4-ranked Lady Pirate tennis team competed this past weekend at the Eighth Annual Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga. Freshman Stephanie Kovacic and sophomore Michaela Kratochvilova each advanced to the second round of the singles portion of the tournament. Kovacic defeated Elmear Sloan of Mississippi State, 6-2, 6-3, before being forced to withdraw from her match with Georgia's Christa Grey with an injury. Kratochvilova defeated Georgia State's Jovana Krisikapa, 6-3, 6-1, before falling to Mississippi State's Anca Vasiloaica, 6-4, 6-2. Kovacic and Kratochvilova also advanced to the second round of the doubles draw because of a withdrawn match, then lost to the No. 1 seeded team of Leigh Bradwell and Brooke Skeen of Kentucky, 9-7.
AASU travels to Texas to face Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 3:00 p.m. and Abilene Christian on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 2:00 p.m. in their first team matches of the season.
Baseball (No. 14 Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II Coaches' Top 25)
Head coach Joe Roberts' No. 14-ranked AASU baseball squad takes to the diamond this weekend with their first games of the season. The Pirates host St. Andrews on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 11:00 a.m. in a doubleheader, then host the Knights on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 1:00 p.m.
The Pirates welcome 16 newcomers and 10 returnees from last season's team that finished 42-14 and ranked No. 10 in the nation. Probable starters this weekend are senior Joey Williams and junior transfers B.J. Brinkmeier and Jason Ackley.
