Men's Basketball (4-8 Overall; 1-1 PBAC)
The Pirate men's basketball squad lost three straight contests over the holidays, falling by nine at Division I College of Charleston on Dec. 21, then after Christmas, tripping up at Valdosta State and losing to No. 14-ranked Georgia College & State.
The Pirates led the Cougars, 17-8, in the first half, but the College of Charleston's defense clamped down and took control for the rest of the game, limiting AASU to just 43 points in the 52-43 victory. Mick Jordan led the Pirates with 12 points, on 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range.
On the 30th of December, the Pirates traveled to Valdosta State, where the Blazers got a little revenge for an earlier-season loss at the hands of AASU. The Pirates led by as many as eight in the second half, but the Blazers closed out the game on a 20-6 run to pick up the 63-55 victory. Robert Campbell led AASU with 17 points.
Sunday evening, the Pirates hosted No. 14-ranked Georgia College & State, with an eye on keeping first place in the PBAC's Southern Division. AASU started out hot, building a seven-point halftime lead and pushing it to 14 points in the second half, but the Bobcats battled back to tie the contest, then took a three-point lead with a minute remaining on a three-pointer. Robert Campbell hit a layup to close the gap to one, but the Pirates could not get the winning shot in the closing moments, losing 70-68.
This week, coach Mills' squad travels to Francis Marion on Wednesday, Jan. 5 for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Patriots, then hosts Lander on Saturday, Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m.
Women's Basketball (3-9 Overall; 0-2 PBAC)
Lynn Jarrett's women's hoops squad dropped two games after the Christmas holidays, falling to Catawba College and Georgia College & State.
The Lady Pirates and the Indians of Catawba struggled in the first half, scoring just 35 points between them, but AASU led 19-16 at the intermission. The Indians came out in the second half and hit their first five three-pointers to take control and cruise to the 57-44 victory. Lori Green scored 12 points for the Pirates, while freshman Dorthell Little grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds.
On Sunday, the Lady Pirates tangled with the Lady Bobcats of Georgia C&SU and hit their first nine shots from the field en route to an early lead. GC&SU fought back and took an 11-point lead into halftime, 47-36. AASU overcame the deficit and tied the game at 71-all in the second half, but the Lady Bobcats hit several shots down the stretch for the victory. Dorthell Little again grabbed 14 rebounds but added a career-high 25 points for the Lady Pirates.
AASU travels to Francis Marion on Wednesday, Jan. 5, for a 5:30 p.m. contest against the Lady Patriots, then hosts Lander on Saturday, Jan. 8, at 5:30 p.m.
