Men's Basketball (9-10 Overall; 6-3 PBAC)
The Pirate men's basketball team took over sole possession of second place in the PBAC's South Division with two victories on the week. AASU downed UNC Pembroke, 67-51, on Wednesday evening, then knocked off Kennesaw State, 67-64, on Saturday.
Junior Robert Campbell had an outstanding week, notching a career high 11 assists in the Pirates' victory over the Braves, then scored a game-high 24 points in Saturday's three-point win over Kennesaw State. Tavares Brown also starred for the Pirates, scoring a game-high 17 against UNCP and hitting the game-winning jumper with 26 seconds left against KSU.
The Pirates also welcomed a new member of the squad, French transfer Gabriel Bata, who saw his first action of the season against UNCP. Bata entered school at AASU during the semester break.
This week, coach Mills' squad travels to North Florida to face the Ospreys on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m., then hosts Columbus State on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 4:00 p.m.
Women's Basketball (4-15 Overall; 1-8 PBAC)
Lynn Jarrett's women's hoopsters finally picked up their first PBAC win of the season, defeating UNC Pembroke, 64-63, on Wednesday evening, halting an eight-game losing streak. AASU then lost to No. 12-ranked Kennesaw State on Saturday, its fifth loss this season to Top 25 squads.
Freshman walk-on Kristin Brewer was the story of the week, after collecting her first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds on Wednesday against the Braves, then grabbing 10 more rebounds in Saturday's game against the Lady Owls. Brewer, who had scored just 19 points all season going into the UNCP game, now has 26 points in her last two games.
AASU travels to North Florida to face the Lady Ospreys on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 5:30 p.m., then hosts Columbus State on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2:00 p.m.
Men's & Women's Tennis (No. 3 (W), No. 4 (M) - NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll)
The No. 3-ranked women's tennis teams did not travel to Texas over the weekend, so both the AASU men's and women's tennis teams will open the season this Saturday, February 5, as they host Division I Winthrop University at 1:00 p.m. The women's team defeated Winthrop, 7-0, last season, while the No. 4-ranked men's squad fell to the Eagles, 5-2.
Following the Winthrop match, both teams will play matches at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla. the women on Wednesday, Feb. 9 and the men on Sat., Feb. 12.
Baseball (No. 14 Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II Coaches' Top 25)
Head coach Joe Roberts' No. 14-ranked AASU baseball team tried twice to open its season this past weekend, but rain forced the postponement of Saturday's doubleheader and the cancellation of Sunday's game against St. Andrews.
AASU will now open the season on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at 11:00 a.m. with a doubleheader against St. Andrews. The Pirates will also entertain Mars Hill for three games over the weekend, beginning with a 11:00 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 5, and a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 6.
