Men's Basketball (10-5 Overall, 3-0 PBC)
The Pirates won two games on the week, improving to 3-0 in the Peach Belt Conference for the first time since the 1994-95 season, defeating Francis Marion, 67-50, and Lander, 67-62.
On Wednesday, senior Robert Campbell scored 20 points on nine-of-13 shooting from the field and junior Mick Jordan chipped in 15 points on five-of-seven shooting from three-point range as the Pirates defeated Francis Marion by 17. Junior guard Donta Humphries added a game-high seven assists and three steals and junior Bart Westgeest chipped in eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Saturday, the Pirates traveled to Lander University and overcame a nine-point second-half deficit with a 10-0 run and went on to the five-point win over the host Senators. Five AASU players scored in double figures, led by Jordan, Campbell and senior Cyrille Mainnemarre, who each had 11 points. Campbell also recorded four steals on the game, including his 300th steal of his career, becoming only the third player in NCAA Division II history to reach the 300 steal plateau. Already the Pirates' and Peach Belt Conference's all-time leader in steals, Campbell has an outside shot at the all-time DII steals mark of 361 held by Oronn Brown of Clarion.
This week, coach Mills' squad travels to cross-town rival Savannah State for a date with the Tigers on Wed., Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m., then the Pirates host Columbus State for a PBC matchup on Sat., Jan. 13 at 4:00 p.m.
Women's Basketball (6-6 Overall, 2-1 PBC)
Coach Roger Hodge's Lady Pirates picked up back-to-back conference wins for the first time in nearly two years this week, defeating No. 22-ranked Francis Marion, 75-72 in overtime, then traveling to Lander and defeating the Lady Senators, 76-74.
Wednesday evening the Lady Pirates defeated a Top 25 team for the first time since the 1997-98 season with their win over Francis Marion. The last time an AASU women's basketball team defeated a ranked team came on Dec. 15, 1997, when AASU defeated No. 18 Florida Tech, 59-47. The win snapped a 12-game losing streak to ranked squads. Sophomore Zandrique Cason led the Lady Pirates with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
On Saturday, the Lady Pirates snapped another long losing streak, this time a 10-game winless streak in road conference games by defeating Lander. Cason again led the Lady Pirates with another double-double (19 points, 11 rebounds) but senior Michelle Hubbard reached a milestone with her 1,000th career point, becoming only the fifth Lady Pirate to reach the 1,000 point plateau.
AASU hosts Nova Southeastern in a non-conference matchup on Mon., Jan. 8 at 5:30 p.m. then hosts No. 5-ranked Columbus State on Sat., Jan. 13 at 2:00 p.m.
