Baseball (8-2 Overall, 1-2 Peach Belt, No. 25 Collegiate Baseball Division II)

The 2002 AASU baseball squad opened up the Peach Belt Conference schedule over the weekend, traveling to Greenwood, S.C., and dropping two of three games to Lander.

Saturday, the Senators jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first five innings, then held on for a 7-6 win in the opening game of the series. Sophomore Chris Dentler hit his first home run of the season for the Pirates, while senior David Harriman collected two hits.

On Sunday, the Pirates took the first game of the doubleheader, 6-2, using back-to-back home runs by Harriman and junior Chris Boaen to give junior Mike Roga his third win of the season. Roga struck out 11 in 7 1/3 innings pitched, giving up just four hits. Lander took the nightcap, 8-2, giving the Senators the series win over the Pirates for the third straight season.

Prior to the weekend series, senior catcher David Harriman was named the Canadian Baseball Player of the Week for his series against Tusculum. The award, sponsored by SLAM! Sports of Canada, is awarded weekly to the top Canadian amateur baseball player playing in the states.

This week, the hosts UNC Pembroke for a weekend PBC series beginning with a doubleheader at Noon on Saturday, February 16 and concluding with a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 17.

Men's Basketball (10-12 Overall, 6-9 Peach Belt)

The Armstrong Atlantic State men's basketball team's losing streak reached seven with losses to South Division-leading Clayton State and North Florida on the week.

The Pirates jumped out to a 19-6 lead on Monday at Clayton State, but the Lakers soon overcame the deficit and went on to the 67-59 victory in Morrow. Senior Donta Humphries led the Pirates with 16 points.

On Wednesday, the Pirates and the Ospreys battled to a 71-all tie with 30 seconds left in the game. Freshman Donny Lotz of UNF drilled a three-pointer with six ticks left on the clock to give the Ospreys the three-point victory, 74-71. Senior Mick Jordan led the Pirates with 21 points, including 5-of-8 three-pointers, and took over the all-time three-point career record from assistant coach Steve Ray with his first trey of the evening. The Sarasota, Fla., native now has 169 career threes for AASU.

Saturday, the Pirates hosted the Lakers for the second time in six days and watched the Lakers shoot a blistering 60 percent from the floor in the first half en route to the 70-54 win. Senior Willard Winn led the Pirates with his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

This week, the Pirates embark on a three-game road trip, beginning on Wednesday, February 13 with a 7:30 p.m. game at North Florida, then continuing on Saturday, February 16 with a 3:00 p.m. matchup at Columbus State.

Women's Basketball (8-14 Overall, 6-9 Peach Belt)

The Lady Pirates split two games with Clayton College & State on the week, sandwiched around a seven-point loss to North Florida on Wednesday.

Monday, the Lady Pirates suffered through their worst shooting day of the season, hitting just 30 percent of their shots from the field in Clayton State's 64-50 win over AASU. Junior Zandrique Cason led the Lady Pirates with 12 points on the evening.

Wednesday evening, the Lady Pirates hosted the Lady Ospreys and watched UNF's 1-2 post combo of Mikel Taylor and Skye Barber combine for 41 points and 16 rebounds in the 71-64 victory. Senior Lexie Martin led the Lady Pirates with 16 points and was honored in a pregame ceremony commemorating her 1,000th point scored. Martin is only one of six AASU women's basketball players to reach the 1,000 point plateau.

Saturday, AASU snapped its three-game losing streak by forcing 22 Clayton State turnovers en route to the 65-53 victory. Junior Shanetra Hodge led four AASU players in double figures with 16 points.

This week, the Lady Pirates will begin a three-game road trip, starting on Wednesday, February 13 at 5:30 p.m. at North Florida, then continuing on Saturday, February 16 with a 1:00 p.m. matchup at Columbus State.

Men's Tennis (0-1, 0-1 Peach Belt, No. 19 NCAA Division II)

The AASU men's tennis team, after having the week off, will host two matches this week, beginning on Saturday, February 16, at 1:00 p.m. against NAIA powerhouse Flagler College, then turning back into conference action on Sunday, February 17 at 1:00 p.m. against No. 9-ranked Francis Marion.

Women's Tennis (3-0, 2-0 Peach Belt, No. 4 NCAA Division II)

The No. 4-ranked women's tennis team continued its perfect start to the 2002 year with a 9-0 defeat of No. 5-ranked Rollins College on Saturday.

The Lady Pirates registered straight-set wins in all six singles matches, highlighted by freshman Annamaria Forgacs' 7-6, 7-5 win over Carla Prieto at No. 2 singles.

The Lady Pirates next host No. 4-ranked NAIA powerhouse Flagler on Saturday, February 16 at 1:00 p.m., then AASU returns to PBC play with a 1:00 p.m. match against No. 29-ranked Francis Marion on Sunday, February 17.
