Baseball (19-5, 5-4 PBAC, No. 16 Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II Coaches' Top 25)
Head coach Joe Roberts' No. 16-ranked AASU baseball team continued to blister through the Savannah Invitational, winning all five contests on the week.
AASU defeated Adelphi on Tuesday, 9-2, as they endured eight hit batters by the Panthers, including a NCAA Division II record-tying seven by Adelphi starter Bryan Rose. The Pirates then came back from an 8-1 deficit to defeat Grand Valley State on Wednesday, 10-9, and hung on for a 10-9 win over Wayne State on Thursday.
Over the weekend, the Pirates got complete-game performances from Simon Stoner and B.J. Brinkmeier in wins over Bryant College, 11-1 and 9-2.
Sunday's game against Bryant saw Kevin Bullard hit his 21st home run of his career, putting the senior into 10th place all-time among AASU home run hitters. Bullard passed Steve Young and is now just one home run behind Danny Moore and current AASU assistant coach Calvain Culberson for eighth place.
This week, the Pirates continue action in the Savannah Invitational with three more games as they host North Dakota State on Monday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m., then Bemidji State on Tuesday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m. and Thursday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m. AASU then returns to PBAC play with a weekend series at No. 25 ranked USC Aiken.
Softball (21-0, 0-0 PBAC, No. 11 NFCA Coaches' Division II Top 25)
The AASU softball squad remained undefeated on the season with shutout doubleheader sweeps of UNC Pembroke, Edinboro, Edward Waters and St. Andrews on the week.
Wednesday, the Lady Pirates defeated UNC Pembroke, 16-0 and 4-0, to open up their PBAC schedule. Thursday, the Pirates hosted Edinboro (Pa.) and defeated the Fighting Scots, 2-0 and 5-0.
Friday, the Lady Pirates traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., and defeated Edward Waters, 17-0 and 18-0. AASU continued the shutout streak on Sunday as they defeated St. Andrews in Laurinburg, N.C., 9-0 and 5-0.
Junior Tesh Wiewel has rapped out hits in each of the Pirates' 21 games so far this season, while junior Crystal McCracken has been the power of the Pirate attack, knocking five home runs, including two in the second game against Edinboro.
AASU returns to action on Monday, March 13, as they play at Catawba at 2:30 p.m., then the Lady Pirates host two PBAC doubleheaders this weekend. AASU hosts USC Aiken on Saturday, March 18 at 1:00 p.m., then Francis Marion on Sunday, March 19, at 2:00 p.m.
Men's & Women's Tennis (10-4, No. 3 (W), 10-2, No. 4 (M) - NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll)
Head coach Simon Earnshaw's men's and women's tennis teams completed a successful week as both squads picked up key wins against nationally-ranked opponents.
The men's squad took on No. 16 Georgia College & State on Wednesday and defeated the Bobcats, 8-1. AASU then hosted No. 3 Florida Southern on Friday and defeated the Mocs, 8-1. The Pirates traveled to California over the weekend and defeated No. 21-ranked UC Davis on Sunday, 5-4, in Davis, Calif.
The women's squad picked up a victory over Division I UNC Charlotte on Monday, defeating the 49ers, 6-3. AASU then kept ahold of first place in the PBAC with a convincing 8-1 win over
No. 5 Georgia College & State on Wednesday in Milledgeville.
This week, the Lady Pirates enjoy spring break off, while the men's team continues its California swing with a Tuesday, March 14 match against Division I University of the Pacific and a Wednesday, March 15 match against defending Division III champion and No. 1-ranked UC Santa Cruz.
