The Armstrong Atlantic State baseball squad picked up four wins on the week, winning last Monday’s final game of the Augusta State series, 9-8, then taking three games from Georgia Southwestern State over Easter weekend.
The Pirates salvaged a game of the three-game series at Augusta State on Monday with a 9-8 win. AASU built a 9-4 lead and held on for the victory as Brandon McCreery retired the final two batters to pick up the save, making a winner out of Ross Partee, who hurled five innings, giving up four runs. Chris Smith, Michael Price and Kenny Cail all had three hits in the game.
AASU then traveled to Americus, Ga., for a three-game set with Georgia Southwestern State, where the Pirates picked up a three-game sweep from the Hurricanes. The Pirates won game one on Friday night, 9-5, behind Joey Davis’ RBI double and two-run home run.
The Pirates swept Saturday’s doubleheader, 8-4 and 12-6, as Juan Dorado collected three doubles and Josh Wilson rapped out seven hits in the two games.
AASU visits No. 14-ranked Erskine for a non-conference contest on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., then returns home to host UNC Pembroke in a three-game PBC series, beginning on Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader and concluding on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
Softball (21-16 Overall, 8-4 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State softball squad picked up two Peach Belt Conference splits and dropped a doubleheader to No. 4 (NAIA) Trevecca Nazarene on the week.
The Pirates opened the week with a league doubleheader against North Georgia. AASU dropped the first game, 7-4, but won the second game, 7-2. Natalie Vogler had a monster day with three home runs in the doubleheader with eight RBI.
AASU then hosted No. 4 Trevecca Nazarene on Wednesday and fell to the undefeated Trojans, 10-5 and 4-3.
Saturday, the Pirates journeyed to Columbus for a doubleheader with the Cougars. Sam Floyd’s solo home run tied game one in the seventh, 1-1, then Erin Billingsley raced home with the game-winning run in the eighth after a Floyd single and an error, giving AASU a 2-1 win. CSU scored three runs in the seventh to win game two, 5-4.
Earlier in the week, Erin Billingsley was named the PBC’s Player of the Week, the second time in AASU player has earned the league’s weekly award.
The Pirates host an exhibition doubleheader against the Georgia Legends on Saturday, March 29, at Noon in their only action this week.
Men’s Tennis (16-0 Overall, 7-0 Peach Belt Conference, No. 1 ITA DII National Rankings)
The top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State men’s tennis team, after a week off, travels to Montgomery, Ala., for the 2008 Blue-Gray Tournament.
The Pirates will face NAIA foe Lindsey Wilson on Thursday, March 27, at 9:00 a.m. in its first action. Bracket play continues on Friday and Saturday in Montgomery with the Pirates possibly facing Emory or West Florida in round two and a possible showdown with AUM on Saturday.
Earlier in the week, freshman Rafael Array was named the PBC’s Player of the Week, the third AASU player to earn the league’s weekly honor.
Women’s Tennis (16-0 Overall, 9-0 Peach Belt Conference, No. 2 ITA DII National Rankings)
The No. 2-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis team heads to Montgomery, Ala., for the 2008 Blue-Gray Tournament after a week off of action.
The Lady Pirates will face DI foe Samford on Thursday, March 27, at 5:30 p.m. AASU will then face either Lindsey Wilson or West Florida on Friday, with a possible showdown against host Auburn Montgomery on Saturday.
Earlier in the week, freshman Alida Muller-Wehlau was named the PBC’s Player of the Week, joining Iuliia Stupak as Lady Pirates who have earned the league’s weekly award.
Men’s Golf
The Armstrong Atlantic State men's golf team shot rounds of 307, 303 and 310 to finish seventh with a three-round 920 total in the Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate, hosted by Jacksonville State University, at the Silver Lakes Golf Club.
Host Jacksonville State won the title with an 886 total, three strokes in front of Murray State (889) and Southern Mississipi (899). Presbyterian (900) and Columbus State (905) rounded out the top five.
Junior Chris Wolfe shot rounds of 79-75-74 to finish with a three-day 228 total, tying for 22nd place and leading the Pirates. Freshman Tanner Farr shot 76-79-77 and finished tied for 35th with a 232 total, while freshman Parker Gordon carded rounds of 73-76-84 to finish tied for 37th with a 233 total. Jon Wingate also tied for 37th with a 233 total after a rounds of 81-77-75 and Mitch Baxley finished in 58th place after round sof 79-75-91, totalling 245 for the tournament.
The Pirates return to action this week on Monday and Tuesday, March 24-25 at the GCSU Bobcat Invitational in Eatonton, Ga.
