Soccer (3-1 Overall, 0-0 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State women's soccer squad traveled to Columbus, Ga., for the CSU Invitational and matchups against two regionally ranked clubs from the SAC.
The Pirates took on No. 4-ranked Carson-Newman on Friday and came out of the starting blocks on fire. Sophomore All-America Kristin Burton scored a natural hat trick in the first 18 minutes of the contest to stake AASU to a 3-0 lead, then the Pirates held on for a 3-1 win over the top-ranked team in the region. The hat trick was the second for Burton in her career, matching her hat trick from last season in a 5-2 win over USC Upstate, and the win represented the highest-ranked opponent AASU has defeated in its three years of existence.
Sunday, the Pirates faced Catawba and, after a scoreless first half, Burton delivered the game’s first goal in the 58th minute. Kristin Savoy added a second goal, off of an assist by Jamie Craine, in the 67th minute for the 2-0 win over the Indians. Tarra Kohler made five saves for her first shutout of the season and sixth of her career, and the win was head coach Eric Faulconer’s 100th collegiate coaching victory in his ninth season his career record now stands at 100-57-7 and 32-13-1 at AASU.
