Volleyball (10-2, 0-0 Peach Belt)

The AASU volleyball team hosted the 2000 AASU Pirate Volleyball Classic over the weekend, featuring 14 teams and 26 matches over three days.

AASU went 3-1 in the tournament, beginning the weekend with a 3-1 win over No. 15-ranked Barry University on Friday. The Pirates then knocked off West Georgia, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon, but fell 3-0 to No. 6 Tampa on Saturday evening. AASU concluded the tournament with a 3-1 win over Florida Southern on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Sarah Haynes had a fine weekend, compiling a .355 hitting percentage in helping the Pirates to three victories. The Huntingtown, Md., native hit a stellar .727 with 16 kills in 22 attempts in Saturday's win over West Georgia.

AASU travels to Florence, Ala., this weekend for a matchup with No. 19 North Alabama and Lincoln Memorial on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Cross Country

AASU women's cross country continued its successful start to the 2000 season by capturing the UNCP Invitational in Lumberton, N.C., on Saturday.

Senior Nikki Garland broke her own course record, set at last year's pre-PBAC meet, capturing the individual title in a time of 17:27.99. Garland and the Lady Pirates scored 17 points, easily outdistancing Coker College (65 points) and host UNC Pembroke (82 points) for the team title.

Senior Amanda Lagesse finished in third place with a time of 19:58.25, followed by sophomore Jillian Charles (4th, 20:10.67), senior Marie-Claude Ostiguy (5th, 20:17.27) and sophomore Michaela Kratochvilova (9th, 20:57.68). Rounding out the AASU scores were freshmen Zsofi Golopencza (10th, 22:05.17) and Sarah Harris (13th, 22:23.27).

The Pirates next travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to compete in the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16.
