Volleyball (8-4 Overall)
The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball squad's two matches against No. 7 Tampa and No. 9 Barry University were postponed due to the tragic events in New York and Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. The matches may be made up at a future date.
This week, the Pirates open up their Peach Belt Conference schedule with two home matches. AASU hosts Augusta State on Friday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m., then takes on USC Aiken on Saturday, September 22 at 4:00 p.m.
Women's Tennis
The Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis team competed in the 2001 Augusta Collegiates in Augusta, Ga., over the weekend. AASU traveled to Augusta instead of the scheduled NCSU Wolfpack Invitational when North Carolina State cancelled all athletic events through the weekend. The Pirates won six of the nine flights competed in the women's bracket and advanced to the finals in each bracket.
Senior Michaela Kratochvilova captured the No. 2 singles flight championship with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Brenau's Bilijana Dinofski, while sophomore Laura Puch won the No. 4 singles flight championship with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Alexis McCarty of USC Aiken. Sophomore Danijela Mijic defeated Florida Gulf Coast's Amy Orlando, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 5 singles flight championship and sophomore Alejandra Aguilar defeated Columbus State's Shannon Johnson, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 6 singles flight championship.
In doubles, freshman Annamaria Forgacs and sophomore Laura Peaty defeated Brenau's duo of Tonya Grib and Kanae Motohasi, 9-8 (7-5) in the No. 2 doubles flight championship. Mijic and Puch defeated Florida Gulf Coast's Murrillo and Orlando, 8-4, to win the No. 3 doubles flight championship.
The AASU women's tennis team will next be in action on Saturday, September 29 through Monday, October 1 as the Pirates host the ITA Southeast Regional.
Men's Tennis
The AASU men's tennis team begins fall competition this weekend at the Southern Collegiates in Athens, Ga., hosted by the University of Georgia. The four-day tournament begins on Friday, August 21 and runs through Monday, August 24.
Golf
The Armstrong Atlantic State men's golf team travels to Uwharrie Point, N.C., for the Johnny Palmer/Old North State Invitational on Tuesday, September 18 and Wednesday, September 19. Sophomores David Roger and Travis Kelly and freshmen Jonathan Cox, Nick Cowper and Lee Clarke will represent the Pirates in their first tournament of the 2001-2002 season.
