Volleyball (11-3, 0-0 Peach Belt, No. 22 AVCA Division II Top 25)

The AASU volleyball team split two matches against Gulf South Conference competition over the weekend, losing 3-0 to No. 19 North Alabama in Florence, Ala., but knocking off Lincoln Memorial, 3-1, in a neutral-site match played in Florence.

The Pirates, ranked No. 22 in the AVCA Division II Top 25 for the first time in school history, now begin Peach Belt play as they travel to Augusta State on Friday, Sept. 22 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Jaguars, then take on USC Aiken on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 3:00 p.m.

Cross Country (No. 4 South Region Rankings)

The AASU women's cross country squad finished second in the college division of the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday, led again by senior Nikki Garland's first-place finish.

Garland finished the five kilometer course in a time of 18:10, defending her Winthrop Invitational title from last season. Sophomore Jillian Charles finished sixth in a time of 20:32, followed closely by senior Marie-Claude Ostiguy, who finished seventh in a time of 20:37. Senior Amanda Lagesse placed 20th in a time of 21:13 and freshmen Zsofi Golopencza (30th, 22:01) and Sarah Harris (34th, 22:36) rounded out the Pirate scoring.

AASU finished with 64 points, 10 points behind college division team champion Mars Hill, who collected 54 points. The Pirates next travel to Spartanburg, S.C., for the USC Spartanburg Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 23.

Men's and Women's Tennis

Juniors Blaise Tribolet and Michaela Kratochvilova captured the Flight 1 men's and women's Singles championships, leading AASU to seven total flight championships in the final day of the 2000 Augusta Collegiate Tennis Championships.

Tribolet defeated the No. 1 seed, Jonas Jarvholm of Shorter, 6-1, 6-3, to capture his flight, then teamed with junior John Stone to capture the Flight 3 Doubles title, 8-1 over No. 1 seed Ryan Horn and Nadeem Riaz of Shorter. Kratochvilova easily dispatched the No. 1 seed Sohie Cremers of Shorter, 6-0, 6-0, in the singles flight championship then teamed with freshman Laura Puch to defeat Cremers and Coralie Roussel 8-4 for the Flight 1 Doubles championship.

Other AASU players winning flight championships included sophomore Aref Jallali, who took the Flight 2 Singles championship with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Federico Rodriguez of Shorter, and freshman Neil McPhee, who defeated No. 1 seed Will Elliott of USC Aiken, 6-7 (8), 6-2, 6-4 for the Flight 5 Singles championship. Laura Puch captured the women's Flight 2 Singles championship with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Roussel of Shorter.

AASU will next host the ITA Women's Tennis Regional Qualifier from Saturday, September 23 through Monday, September 25 at the AASU Tennis Complex.
