Volleyball (10-4 Overall, 2-0 Peach Belt)

The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball team opened its Peach Belt Conference schedule with two wins on the week, knocking off Augusta State and USC Aiken by 3-0 scores and improving to 10-4 overall.

AASU defeated the Jaguars, 30-11, 30-25, 30-19 on Friday evening as juniors Sofie Hakansson and Sarah Haynes and freshman Alexia Piche-Hatch each recorded 10 kills for the Pirates. The Pirates then knocked off USC Aiken, 30-23, 30-27, 30-22 on Saturday afternoon behind 11 kills and 18 digs from Hakansson and 10 kills each from Haynes and freshman Candice Modlinski.

This week, the Pirates host North Florida on Wednesday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m., then travel on the road for PBC matches against USC Spartanburg on Friday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. and Lander on Saturday, September 29 at 2:00 p.m.

Women's Tennis

The Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis team hosts the ITA Southeast Regional from Saturday, September 29 through Monday, October 1 at the AASU Tennis Complex.

Over 60 players from at least 12 different schools will compete in singles and doubles action, with the winner of each bracket advancing to the ITA Small College National Championships in Dallas, Texas, on October 19-21.

Men's Tennis

The Armstrong Atlantic State men's tennis team participated in its first fall tournament over the weekend, playing at the 2001 Southern Collegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.

Freshman Leonardo Motta picked up a singles win in the Division I flight, defeating Mike Yani of Duke, 7-6, 6-1, but lost in the third round to Paul Ciorascu of Mississippi, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Roger Thiele also went 1-1 in singles play in the Division III flight, losing to Joachim Peterson of Charlotte, 6-2, 6-2, but knocking of Jim Jacobs of Mississippi, 7-5, 7-5. Freshman Dale White picked up two wins in the Division III flight, defeating Josh Tarkoff of Vanderbilt, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 and Greg Pollack of Middle Tennessee, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, before losing to Darin Goldstein of Duke, 7-6, 6-1. Junior Michael Jezt picked up two wins in the Division IV flight, defeating Dan Regan of Stetson, 6-1, 6-1, and Petr Pospisil of Florida A&M, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, before losing to Michael Maddox of Tennessee, 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles action, the duo of Jezt and White picked up two wins in the Division III flight, knocking off the duo of Kacov/Witting of Mercer, 8-1, and a walkover win over Cahppell/Ilie of Tennessee Tech.

The Pirate men's tennis team returns to action on October 5-8 as it hosts the ITA Southeast Regional at the AASU Tennis Complex.

Golf

The Armstrong Atlantic State men's golf team finished tied for seventh at the Johnny Palmer/Old North State Invitational, hosted by Pfeiffer University, last week in the Pirates' first tournament action of the 2001-2002 season.

The Pirates finished the tournament with a two-day total of 600, 24-over-par. Freshman Nick Cowper followed up his first-day 69 with a 77 to finish the tournament with a two-over-par 146 total, tying for 11th individually. Freshman Lee Clarke followed up his first-round 71 with a second-round 76 to finish with a three-over-par 147 total, tying for 20th individually.

Rounding out the final scores for the Pirates were: freshman Jonathan Cox, who shot a team-best 74 on the second day to finish with an eight-over-par 152 total, tying for 46th individually; sophomore Travis Kelly, who finished with a 12-over-par 156 total, tying for 62nd individually; and sophomore David Roger who shot a 16-over-par 160 total, tying for 84th individually.

The AASU golfers are back in action on October 7-9 at the Presbyterian College Intercollegiate in Clinton, S.C.
