Soccer (1-1 Overall, 0-0 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State women's soccer squad split two matches in the first two weeks of the season, as well as splitting two matches with Mother Nature, in beginning the 2007 season.
The Pirates were supposed to open the year against fellow NCAA regional participant Nova Southeastern on August 24, but heavy rains in Tampa forced the cancellation of that match. AASU did open its season two days later, on Sunday, August 26, at Florida Southern. After spotting the Mocs three goals in the first 30 minutes, the Pirates closed the margin to one on goals by Shana Neves and Kelli Bahr, the latter coming in the 88th minute. That would be as close as the Pirates would get, however, with a 3-2 loss.
AASU picked up its first win of the season on Friday, August 31, as the Pirates shut out Erskine, 4-0, in Due West, S.C. Sophomore All-America forward Kristin Burton tallied two goals in the first half, then Kristin Savoy added her first goal of the year before halftime. Brittany Carr added the fourth goal in the second half as the Pirates outshot the Flying Fleet, 21-2.
Sunday, the Pirates were scheduled to open their home season against Flagler, but again rain prevailed, forcing the postponement of the game until a later date.
This week, the Pirates hit the road again for two games in Columbus, Ga. AASU faces nationally-ranked Carson-Newman on Friday at 5:00 p.m., then the Pirates will take on Catawba on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Volleyball (2-5 Overall, 0-0 Peach Belt Conference)
The Armstrong Atlantic State volleyball squad opened the 2007 season with a 12-day road trip, visiting Memphis, Tenn., and Alaska in a seven-match swing.
The Pirates opened the season at the Christian Brothers Tournament in Memphis on Friday, August 24, falling in five games to host Christian Brothers, 30-23, 26-30, 30-26, 28-30, 15-10. Freshman Elimari Escalante led the Pirates with 18 kills and 19 digs, while senior Rindy Vidovich notched 14 kills and junior setter Kara Jerden tallied 40 assists and 13 digs. The Pirates then faced Harding and fell in three to the Bisons, 30-14, 30-21, 30-15.
AASU rebounded on Saturday to take two on the final day of the tournament, defeating Belhaven in three games, 30-19, 30-17, 30-22, then taking out Ouachita Baptist in three, 30-26, 30-24, 31-29. Rindy Vidovich, who tallied 12 kills against Ouachita Baptist and hit .304 with 15 digs against Belhaven, was named to the All-Tournament team.
AASU then traveled to Alaska for an eight-day tour of the 49th state, as well as three matches against DII squads. The Pirates made a day-long trip to Fairbanks to play the Nanooks on Tuesday, losing in five games, 30-24, 26-30, 30-25, 23-30, 15-10. Escalante tallied 15 kills and 18 digs, while Vidovich chipped in 14 kills and 11 digs.
Friday, the Pirates visited Alaska-Anchorage and dropped another five-game match, 30-28, 23-30, 30-26, 24-30, 15-11. Vidovich led the way with a triple-double of 15 kills, 12 digs and 10 blocks, just the third triple-double in AASU volleyball history. Saturday, AASU finished off the road trip with another five-game loss to the Seawolves, 30-19, 23-30, 25-30, 30-24, 15-7.
This week, the Pirates open up their home schedule by hosting the 2007 Chatham Orthopedics Volleyball Classic. AASU will host Coker at 1:00 p.m. and Catawba at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, then host Florida Tech at Noon and Northwood (Mich.) at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
