College Soccer: AASU 8, Anderson 0
SAVANNAH, Ga. Five different Armstrong
Atlantic players scored first-half goals and freshman Amaka
Ofuani notched a hat trick in the second half as the
Pirate womens soccer squad knocked off Anderson, 8-0, at
Cingular Field on Friday afternoon in Savannah.
The Pirates (12-3) bettered their inaugural seasons 11 wins with the victory and tied a single-game scoring mark with eight goals, matching last seasons eight scored in an 8-0 win over Georgia Southwestern on September 19. The Hurricanes are AASUs next opponent, on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in Americus.
Senior captain Donna Cheyne began the scoring with a goal in the sixth minute off of a cross from Lyndsi Stricklen, the PBCs assist leader. Just over a minute later, freshman Kristin Burton added to her PBC-leading goal total with a flick that beat Anderson (4-11) keeper Kelli Whitfield, again off of a feed from Stricklen. Shana Neves delivered the third goal of the half on a nice header from a corner kick fed in by Stricklen that made the match 3-0.
A pair of AASU players scored their first goals as Pirates to wrap up the first-half action. Kim Van Houten fired a loose ball in the box into the back of the net in the 37th minute, then Ginny Child sent home a goal after a free kick in the 44th minute to give AASU a 5-0 halftime lead.
After intermission, it was all Ofuani as the freshman delivered on a penalty kick in the 68th minute, a through ball in the 85th minute and on a header from a corner kick in the 86th minute. It was the second hat trick in as many home games for the Pirates as Ofuani matched Kristin Burtons hat trick against USC Upstate on October 3 the only hat tricks in AASUs brief soccer history.
AASU outshot the Trojans, 44-1, and Whitfield made 15 saves in goal for Anderson. The Trojans will try to snap their six-match losing streak next with a home match against Erskine on Thursday, October 19, at 5:00 p.m.
