College Soccer: AASU 3, GCSU 0

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Armstrong Atlantic State women’s soccer squad registered its fourth straight shutout, and freshman Kristin Burton delivered two second-half goals to propel the Pirates to a 3-0 Peach Belt women’s soccer victory over visiting Georgia College & State University on Friday afternoon in Savannah.

The Pirates (15-3, 8-1 PBC) will head into the PBC Championships as the No. 2 seed, while GCSU (5-6-4, 2-3-3) must wait to see what happens this weekend. There is a possibility the two teams may see each other in the first round on Wednesday, Oct. 25, in Savannah.

A defensive first half looked like it would head into intermission scoreless, but freshman Amaka Ofuani broke free with two minutes remaining to beat GCSU keeper Kristen Moore far post for the first tally of the contest and the 1-0 halftime lead. AASU outshot the Bobcats, 9-1, in the first 45 minutes.

After halftime it was time for Burton to add to her PBC-leading goal tally as the Ocala native broke into the box on a flick-on header by Shana Neves, beat Moore with a dribble and scored to give AASU an insurance goal in the 56th minute. Three minutes later, Burton charged hard into the box, beat GCSU defender Miranda Markestyn and scored her second goal of the match.

The Pirates finished the match with a 16-7 shot advantage over the Bobcats. Ofuani’s goal gives the Pirates two 10-goal scorers this season for the second straight year, joining Burton’s PBC-leading 17 goal total.

AASU will wrap up its regular season with a 2:00 p.m. match on Sunday against Belmont Abbey. GCSU will wrap up its regular season with a 4:00 p.m. match on Sunday as the Bobcats host Thomas University.
