College Soccer: AASU 1, UNC Pembroke 0
2006 Peach Belt Conference Tournament First Round

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Armstrong Atlantic survived a tough defensive effort by visiting UNC Pembroke in the first round of the 2006 Peach Belt Conference Women’s Soccer tournament, besting the Braves by a 1-0 score at Cingular Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pirates (17-3) advance to the PBC Final Four where they will face No. 3-seed Clayton State, a 4-0 winner over No. 6 North Georgia, on Saturday, October 28. UNC Pembroke (7-11-1) sees its season come to a close.

The two teams – meeting for the second time in just a week – played a scoreless first half despite the Pirates outshooting the Braves by a 16-4 margin. In the opening stages of the second half, the Pirates finally found the back of the net in the 53rd minute as freshman Kristin Burton received a pass from senior Donna Cheyne at the top of the box. With a player on her back, Burton turned to her right and beat UNC Pembroke keeper Hillary Helms with a shot that curled in the near post for her 19th goal of the season.

AASU would continue to pile up the shots throughout the second half, but could not find an insurance goal. The Braves had three corner kicks in the final six minutes, the final one resulting in a loose ball in the box, a blocked shot on a header and finally a shot high of the crossbar by Ashley McManus.

Pirate goalkeeper Tarra Kohler made two saves as the Pirates picked up their sixth straight shutout with the win, while the Braves’ Helms registered eight saves on the match. Kohler has not given up a goal in her last 500 minutes of play, dating back to Oct. 9, and the six straight shutouts extends an Armstrong Atlantic school best.
