College Soccer: AASU 6, Lander 0
SAVANNAH, Ga. (October 27) The Armstrong Atlantic State women’s soccer squad closed out the regular season with a convincing 6-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting Lander on Saturday afternoon at AT&T Field.
The Pirates (12-3-1, 6-1-1 PBC) took charge early with two goals in the match’s first eight minutes. Kristin Savoy’s sliding shot off of Lyndsi Stricklen’s cross in the seventh minute put AASU up, 1-0, then a minute and a half later, Stricklen put in a shot after a Kelli Bahr header from a corner kick her seventh straight match with a goal, tying for the longest streak this season in the league.
Sophomore All-America Kristin Burton would extend the lead to 3-0 in the 38th minute on a great individual goal, taking the ball just past midfield and working her way through two Lander defenders, beating Bearcat goalkeeper Rachel Hine near side for her 18th goal of the season. AASU added one more goal before halftime as Kelli Bahr drove home a rebound from the crossbar for her second goal of the season in the 44th minute.
AASU outshot the Bearcats, 16-2, in the first half, with Lander’s first shot coming in the 43rd minute.
The Pirates would add two goals in the second half as Savoy picked up her second goal of the match in the 51st minute, then Burton added her second goal of the match in the 58th minute. Burton ties her school-record single-season goal mark of 19, which she set as a freshman.
The Pirates honored their three seniors in a pre-match ceremony for playing their final regular season home match Ashley Elam, Holly Grulich and Tarra Kohler, with Kohler getting the start in goal.
With the win, AASU will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming PBC Championships, which begin on Tuesday, October 30. The Pirates will host a 2:00 p.m. match against an opponent to be determined. Lander will also host a first-round PBC match on Tuesday.
