College Soccer: AASU 4, Erskine 2

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshman Shana Neves’ two goals, including a 2-2 tiebreaker in the 54th minute, propelled the Armstrong Atlantic women’s soccer team to a 4-2 victory over visiting Erskine College on Tuesday afternoon in Savannah.

Neves started the scoring in the contest with a rebound goal in the 10th minute to put the Pirates (6-6) up, 1-0. Fellow freshman Lyndsi Stricklen then banged in a shot into the upper right corner off of a cross from Claire McCombe to give AASU a two goal lead, which to that point in the contest seemed safe.

Erskine (3-8-1) battled back behind scoring leader Aisha Reid, who took a throw-in for a quick shot. The ball rebounded off of AASU keeper Lisa Gray, but Reid followed her own shot for her 13th goal of the season to bring the deficit to 2-1 going in to halftime.

The Flying Fleet equalized in the 52nd minute as Gray tried to play a ball out of the box. Her misplay ended up on the feet of Erskine midfielder Jodie Locke, who put the ball into the net for her third goal of the year and a new match at 2-2. Armstrong Atlantic responded just two minutes later as a set piece off of a free kick found Shana Neves in front of the net, where she put in the ball off of a Lyndsi Stricklen cross from the near side for her second goal of the game and the eventual game-winner.

The Pirates added an insurance goal in the 67th minute as Neves assisted on Donna Cheyne’s fifth goal of the season that sealed the victory.

AASU outshot the Flying Fleet, 28-8, and Erskine keeper Katy Jackson made nine saves on the day, including several from point-blank range. Jackson robbed Stricklen twice on hard-angle shots and stopped Aubrie Roberts on a shot in front of the goal while sprawled on the ground. Gray finished the afternoon with one save for the Pirates.

AASU returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8, with a PBC contest against USC Aiken at 1:00 p.m. Erskine is next in action on Oct. 8 as well in a CVAC contest against Pfeiffer.
