College Soccer: No. 14 AASU 5, Flagler 0

SAVANNAH, Ga. (October 9) – The No. 14-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State women’s soccer squad remained unbeaten at home with a 5-0 victory over visiting Flagler College on Tuesday afternoon at AT&T Field in Savannah.

The match, originally scheduled for September 2 but postponed due to the sub-tropical system that moved through the Savannah area that weekend, started off quickly for the Pirates again as sophomore All-America forward Kristin Burton scored the first goal of the match off of an assist from Jennifer Brian in the 14th minute for the 1-0 lead. Burton was on the service end of the second goal as her cross found Maggie Kennedy near the far post. Kennedy headed in the goal, but collided with teammate Holly Grulich and spent several minutes on the ground – she would leave the field under her own power and come back into the match in the second half.

Burton would tally her second goal before halftime, taking a Brittany Carr pass up the middle for a one-on-one with Flagler keeper Hope McArthur, burying it for the 3-0 lead. The reigning PBC Player of the Year now has 12 multi-goal matches in her career.

The second half started with the Pirates again in control, scoring just seven minutes into the period. Shana Neves beat McArthur with the ball, then crossed to a wide open Carr in front of the net for the goal in the 52nd minute. AASU would close out the scoring in the 81st minute as Lyndsi Stricklen scored off of a cross from Jamie Craine for the 5-0 win.

AASU outshot the Saints, 18-6, the first time in the last four matches that the Pirates have outshot their opponents. The Pirates also had 12 shots on goal, their second-highest single game total of the year. McArthur had a busy day in net, making six saves, while freshman Tracey Mitchell and sophomore Samantha Held combined on the shutout for the Pirates. Mitchell made two saves.

The Pirates return to action on Friday, October 12, with a 7:00 p.m. Peach Belt match at USC Aiken. Flagler returns to action on Sunday, October 14, with a 5:00 p.m. match at Barry.
