AASU Earns NCAA At-Large Bid, Hosts First- and Second-Round Matches

SAVANNAH, Ga. (November 5) – The No. 24-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State women’s soccer team has earned an at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championships, announced today by the NCAA. The bid is the second straight for the Pirates and AASU will also serve as one of two first- and second-round regional hosts.

The Pirates (14-4-1) are the No. 4 seed in the Southeast Region bracket and will host No. 5 seed and SAC champion Lincoln Memorial (14-4-1) on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in a first-round match. Top-seeded Tusculum (14-6) will then face the winner of Friday’s match in a second-round contest at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The other half of the Southeast Region bracket will take place in Columbus, with No. 3 seed Columbus State taking on No. 6 seed Queens (NC) on Friday, with second-seeded Carson-Newman meeting the winner on Sunday.

In just its third season of competition, the Pirates have now made back-to-back NCAA Championships appearances. AASU faces Lincoln Memorial for the first time in school history on Friday, but the Pirates have had good success with teams from the SAC this season, going 3-1 in matches against that league. LMU is 1-1 in matches against the PBC this season.

Tusculum makes its second trip to Savannah this year, following up its 4-1 win over AASU back on October 15. Overall, the Pioneers are 2-0 against the Peach Belt Conference in 2007.

Admission to the 2007 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championships will be $7 for adults and $5 for children and students with college ID. For complete championship brackets and more information, please visit the NCAA’s official championships website at http://www.ncaasports.com.
