WINTER PARK, Fla. The
Rollins College womens soccer team (4-1-0) defeated the
visiting Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State University (2-4-0)
by a score of 3-0, to improve their overall record on the season
to 4-1. The Tars were led by senior forward Alexis Sutton
(Columbia, S.C.) who notched two goals in the game.
The Tars started the game by pressuring the Pirates goalkeeper
freshman Lisa Gray. In the ninth minute of action, sophomore Jeri
Ostuw (Daytona, Fla.) put a hard shot on goal that hit off of the
post and bounced back into the goal box where it hit off of the
hand of a Pirate defender. The Tars were awarded a penalty kick,
which senior Laura Guild (Jupiter, Fla.) pounded into the net,
giving the Tars a 1-0 lead. The goal was Guilds third this
season.
The first half concluded with the Tars up 1-0 and leading in
shots 6-3. During the second half, the Tars defense took control
of the game and they did not allow a single shot on goal. The
defensive line led by junior captain Alison Tradd (Longwood,
Fla.), was able to push forward and keep the ball in the
Tars offensive zone. Sutton scored the first of her two
goals in the 62nd minute. Freshman Carissa Cartas (Orlando, Fla.)
put a shot on goal that the keeper blocked, only to have the ball
fall to the feet of Sutton who pounced on it and put it home for
a Tars goal.
Sutton got on the board for the Tars again only 13 minutes later.
Rollins was awarded a free kick just inside the half line and
junior Lindsay Taylor (Jupiter, Fla.) sent the kick into the goal
area. The ball bounced to junior Ashley Hunsberger (New Britain,
Pa.) who tapped it forward to Sutton who put it in the goal.
Suttons two goals on the game are her first for the season.
The game concluded with the Tars ahead 3-0 on the scoreboard and
leading 13-3 in shots. Rollins goalkeeper Francesca Nicoloso
(Tallahassee, Fla.) recorded her 16th career shutout. Shana
Neves recorded two of the Pirates' three shots on the
afternoon, while Gray made six saves.
The Tars will return to action on Wednesday, September 14 against
Embry-Riddle. AASU returns to action on Saturday, September 17 in
its Peach Belt Conference opener against Lander at 4:00 p.m.
