College Soccer: AASU 4, North Georgia 1

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Armstrong Atlantic State women’s soccer squad won its program-best sixth in a row, besting North Georgia, 4-1, in a Peach Belt Conference match at Cingular Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates (6-1, 2-0 PBC) outshot the Lady Saints, 20-2, in the first half but had just one goal to show for it as Jennifer Brian placed a shot from 35 yards out in the top right corner in the 33rd minute for AASU’s 1-0 lead at intermission.

Freshman Kristin Burton gave the Pirates a two-goal advantage with her sixth goal of the season, converting off of a pass from Lyndsi Stricklen in the 56th minute. North Georgia (2-4-1, 0-2 PBC) answered back, however, as Jessica Williams headed in a shot off of Sarah Hales’ free kick in the 59th minute to cut the lead to 2-1.

Burton put the Pirates back up by two with her second goal of the game in the 63rd minute. The Ocala, Fla., native has four goals in her first two home games as a Pirate. Emily Latner capped the scoring with a header off of a corner from Lyndsi Stricklen in the 87th minute.

North Georgia keeper Mary Canon-Williams recorded nine saves on the afternoon, while Samantha Held continued her scoreless streak by holding the Saints without a goal in the first half. Tarra Kohler entered in the second half and made one save.

AASU outshot the Saints, 30-6, for the contest and took seven corners compared to the Saints’ four.

The Pirates next host Columbus State on Wednesday, September 20, for a key Peach Belt battle at 4:00 p.m. North Georgia next plays at Georgia Southwestern on Tuesday, September 19, at 4:00 p.m.
