College Soccer: No. 11 AASU 7, Georgia Southwestern State 0

SAVANNAH, Ga. (September 22) – The No. 11 Armstrong Atlantic State women’s soccer squad scored three goals in a 71-second stretch early in the second half, propelling the Pirates to a 7-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over visiting Georgia Southwestern State on Saturday afternoon at AT&T Field.

Junior Shana Neves recorded her first career hat trick and sophomore All-America Kristin Burton tallied two goals and two assists for the Pirates (5-1-1, 2-0-1 PBC) as AASU dominated statistically, recording 45 shots to Hurricanes’ five. Freshman Kyndal Schaaf and junior Jen Brian added goals as well.

Burton didn’t take long in getting on the board, scoring in the eighth minute after a flick-on header by Stricklen left her in the box with space. Burton then delivered two consecutive assists, one to Schaaf on a corner kick in the 19th minute, then one on a through ball to Neves in the 26th minute that gave AASU a 3-0 lead at halftime.

The score remained 3-0 until the 54th minute, when Jen Brian’s goal on a cross by Neves opened the flood gates. Neves then followed just 31 seconds later with her second goal of the game, and Burton finished off the run with her second goal of the day in the 55th minute.

The Hurricanes (0-9, 0-1 PBC) generated little offense on the day, testing freshman Tracey Mitchell with five shots in her first collegiate start. Mitchell recorded four saves on the afternoon. Georgia Southwestern State was also forced to play without head coach Barry Kaplan, who received his second yellow card for dissent in the 39th minute, and Lauren Heaslip, who received her second yellow card in the 65th minute, forcing the Hurricanes to play with just 10 players for the final 25 minutes.

Hurricane goalkeeper Christy Drabek made 13 saves in a busy day in the net.

The Pirates return to action on Thursday, September 27, as AASU travels to Charlotte for a 6:00 p.m. matchup with Queens (NC). Georgia Southwestern will be next in action on Saturday, September 29, as the Hurricanes host Lander at 1:00 p.m.
