College Soccer: AASU 4, Savannah College of Art & Design 1

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshman forward Kristin Burton tallied two goals to help Armstrong Atlantic State pick up a 4-1 women’s college soccer victory over cross-town rival Savannah College of Art and Design on Tuesday afternoon at Cingular Field.

The Pirates (8-2) got on the board quickly as senior Donna Cheyne fed Burton on the left side with a nifty pass, which Burton finished in the fifth minute to give AASU a quick 1-0 lead. The duo hooked up again for another goal in the 22nd minute as Burton’s cross on the left side found Cheyne on the back post, which Cheyne finished for a 2-0 advantage.

AASU would take a 3-0 lead into halftime after Shana Neves’ turnaround shot found the back of the net in the 35th minute. The Pirates came into the match having scored just seven first-half goals in their first nine contests of the season, but the three-goal explosion put the game away early.

Burton would tally her second goal of the game in the 57th minute as she finished a breakaway chance for her third two-goal game of the season. The Ocala, Fla., native has now scored seven of her 10 goals this season at home and becomes just the third player in AASU’s brief history to record double-digit goals in a season.

SCAD found the back of the net in the 75th minute when Haley Almeida’s shot from outside the box on the left side hopped over AASU keeper Tarra Kohler for a score, Almeida’s first of the year.

Kohler made three saves for the Pirates in the second half, giving up just the one goal. Samantha Held made seven saves for AASU in the first half in not giving up a goal, while SCAD keeper Laura Hansen made five saves in the match.

Playing from behind most of the match, SCAD outshot the Pirates by a 28-19 margin and had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-1.

The Pirates next travel to USC Aiken for a Peach Belt Conference match on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 5:30 p.m. in Aiken, S.C. SCAD is also next in action on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home match against Warner Southern.
