College Soccer: Belmont Abbey 4, AASU 3

BELMONT, N.C. – With a scoring duo of sophomore Erin Kolb and freshman Randi Collerette, Belmont Abbey handed Armstrong Atlantic State University women’s soccer team a 4-3 loss and kept the Pirates winless on the road Tuesday afternoon.

The Crusaders (8-3) jumped to an early lead t as Kolb knocked in a shot from the eighteen in the first three minutes of play. Shortly after Kolb’s goal, Collerette took a pass from sophomore Lisa Perrotta and went one on one against freshman keeper Lisa Gray, beating her to put Belmont Abbey up 2-0. Kolb then recorded her second goal of the match as she chipped in a shot from just outside the eighteen off a through ball from sophomore Lauren Strebler to increase the lead 3-0.

AASU (5-5) got on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute off an indirect kick as Claire McCombe booted a low line drive past freshman goalkeeper Anna Wells. Junior Donna Cheyne recorded her fifth assist of the season on the play. Then freshman Lyndsi Stricklen placed a booming shot into the net in the 23rd minute to relinquish the deficit to one and both teams went into halftime with score, 3-2.

“We can’t expect to beat good teams on the road if we continue to dig ourselves into a 3-2 deficit.” AASU head coach Eric Falconer said. “We have to play with heart and passion in order to be successful.”

Collerette rounded out scoring for the Crusaders and increased the lead 4-2 with her second goal of the match in the 69th minute off a pass from Kolb. AASU would never catch up despite efforts from sophomore Emily Latner.

Latner headed a ball into the back of the goal from seven yards out off a corner kick to record her first collegiate goal and cap off the Pirates scoring. Ashley Brown tallied her third assist of the season.The Pirates had several chances late, including a corner kick with just 10 ticks left on the clock, but could not capitalize.

The Crusaders will next play host to Queens University October 1. The Pirates will resume conference play as the travel to No. 6-ranked Clayton State on Saturday, October 1.
