College Soccer: Saint Leo 5, AASU 2

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University junior forward Casie Poyssick of Land O’Lakes, Fla., scored two goals and had two assists, while senior defender Kristin Stephens of Orlando, Fla., added a pair of goals as the Lions dealt Armstrong Atlantic University a 5-2 women’s soccer setback Friday afternoon. Saint Leo evened its record on the season at 2-2, while the Pirates dropped to 2-3.

The Lions started off like they were going to turn the match into a rout. They scored a pair of goals in a 12-second time frame (the 2:26 and 2:38 marks). Poyssick found the back of the net first off an assist by freshman forward Kaitlin Andrews of Mays Landing, NJ. Sophomore midfielder Jennifer O’Connor of Fernandina Beach, Fla., scored her third goal of the season on an assist by Poyssick to make it 2-0.

There was no scoring for the next 53 minutes. However, the Lions made it 3-0 on a goal by Stephens off an assist by freshman defender Crystal Rinaldi of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., at the 55:16 mark. Some 53 seconds later the Pirates hit the scoreboard on a goal by junior defender Jessica Chipple. Junior midfielder Donna Cheyne picked up her first of two assists on the match. The Pirates cut the deficit to 3-2 at the 59:08 mark on a goal by freshman forward Lyndsi Stricklen.

Saint Leo regrouped and Poyssick scored her fifth goal of the year (unassisted) at 70:49. The Lions added an insurance goal by Stephens, her second on the year, at 75:09 on assists by Poyssick and O’Connor.

Saint Leo outshot Armstrong Atlantic 13-8. Lion freshman goalie Lauren Hudson of New Port Richey, Fla., had four saves, while Pirate freshman keeper Lisa Gray had two saves. Poyssick had three of her team’s seven shots on goal, while Stephens had a pair. Stricklen had half of her team’s six shots on goal, while Chipple had a pair.
