Women's Tennis: No. 2 AASU (DII) 5, Winthrop 2

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Armstrong Atlantic State women’s tennis team visited Divsion I Winthrop on Friday morning and knocked off the Eagles, 5-2, to run its current regular season match win streak to 80.

The No. 2-ranked Lady Pirates (13-0) won two of three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. Iuliia Stupak and Johanna Dahlback defeated Ana Paula Novaes and Paula Pereira, 8-2, at the top doubles spot, then Sofia Haggstrom and Alisa Kakugina defeated Larisa Bekmetova and Yelena Fadina, 9-8 (3), in the decisive doubles match.

AASU then picked up four of six singles wins, paced by Stupak's 6-0, 6-4 win over Novaes at the top singles spot. The win was the sixth straight for the Lady Pirates over a Division I foe - the last DI team to defeat AASU in a dual match was Winthrop back in 2000.

Expected inclement weather has pushed back the Lady Pirates' next scheduled match against USC Upstate from Saturday to April 9. AASU will next be in action now on Sunday against USC Aiken at 1:00 p.m.
