Sports Information
MONTGOMERY, Ala. It was
billed as a clash of the small college titans and it was every
bit of that and more as the defending NCAA Division II national
champion, and still undefeated, Armstrong Atlantic State
University womens tennis defeated the Lady Senators 5-4.
The match was exciting as five of the six singles
matches went three sets, and the difference was the two wins AASU
picked up in doubles. The doubles team of Luisa Cowper and Iuliia
Stupak defeated AUMs Nadia Lysak and Yudeshnee Pillay 8-0
to start the match off. AUMs Kamila Dadakhodjaeva and Aina
Rafolomanantsiatosika won 8-3 at two doubles, and Dziyana Nazaruk
and Johanna Dahlback of AASU came back from 5-2 down at three
doubles to win 8-6.
In singles, No. 3-ranked Luisa
Cowper blasted No. 20-ranked NAIA Nadia Lysak, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1
singles, while No. 8-ranked Dziyana Nazaruk knocked off No.
8-ranked NAIA Khade Berthe, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Manuela
Emmrich picked up the third singles win with a 6-4, 3-6,
6-3 win over No. 37 NAIA Nathalie Sienkob.
AASUs record moves to 21-0 on the season, while AUM falls to 22-1. It is the first loss in over 50 matches for AUM, who had not lost since Lynn University beat then in the 2004 season, while AASU extends its current match win streak to 51.
