2006 Mid-Atlantic Regional: No. 1 AASU 6, Shaw 0
SAVANNAH, Ga. The top-ranked
and defending DII national champion Armstrong Atlantic State
women's tennis squad began its title defense with a 6-0 victory
over Shaw in the first round of the Mid-Atlantic Regional in
Savannah on Thursday morning.
AASU (26-0) dropped just one point in doubles play, sweeping all three matches, then picked up three singles wins to clinch the match. Senior Manuela Emmrich picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Victoria Enebechi at No. 3 singles, while senior Caroline Grage also picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Monique Lawson at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Sofia Haggstrom rounded out the AASU singles winners with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ronke Oyelade at No. 6 singles. The win stretched AASU's current win streak to 56 consecutive matches, while Shaw - the CIAA champion - ends its season at 17-3.
The Lady Pirates advance to the Mid-Atlantic Region Championship match on Friday, May 5, at 10:00 a.m. against the winner of Francis Marion/GC&SU.
